Some fantastic images of Edgware High Street in 1903

From George Scammell's National Photographic Record and Survey held by the V&A

You can see why Edgware was once considered "quaint, curious and ancient" and like "looking at some medieval German town

The Cypriot town of Morphou has been twinned with Barnet since 1995

The Greek Cypriots of the town fled in the wake of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the twinning is with the council in exile in Limassol

In 2008 Barnet named a new road in Mill Hill East after the town

Originally twinned with Finchley since at least the 1960s, the two suburbs hold photography competitions and wreaths are shared on Remembrance Sunday (as well as with Chaville)

Mill Hill is home to one of Britain's very last glass eye makers

Jost Haas's work is highly valued by those who use them but his trade is considered "critically endangered" by the Heritage Crafts Association

Did you know Hendon once had its own local currency of sorts?

In the late 18th century it featured St Mary's Church Hendon, famed actor David Garrick (who had been Lord of the Manor) and a Greyhound (presumably for the Inn?)

Great podcast with Michael Rosen on Street Names

Anyone know the origin of "Rosens Walk" in Edgwarebury?

It didn't exist in 1900 (indeed only Clay Lane around there did)

Matthew Engels on Middlesex

From the 1200s when it was "infested by outlaws and beasts"

In the 1700s it was "but the suburbs at large of London, replenished with the retiring houses of the gentry"

Lord Macauley wrote "an acre in Middlesex is better than a principality in Utopia"
