The town of Kier shows up as "Kier PE" in addresses seen in the show, but PE isn't a real state abbreviation. I second the upstate New York (Great Awakening) vibes.

And on top of that “good soldierism” is rampant, so senior faculty and lower level admins will defer to “the institution” and avoid doing anything that someone higher up hasn’t explicitly approved. Knowing your place > acting on principle.

But also, the NSF Political Science program gets singled out most.

That raises the possibility that they don’t know what social science is, they just want to make sure “liberal professors” don’t get money to talk about politics.
