I also think of the stories that my Nanna, Eileen Herbener (née Smith) told me of hiding in the bomb shelters in London during the Blitz. She lost her brother Reg, a pilot, during the war.

I didn’t actually see the movie until I was in my 20s - which in my head is much more recent than the calendar claims is true.

It’s similar in terms of “governing as if we had a majority”, but the NDP weren’t in such terrible shape nationally in 1979. They weren’t really ready for an election then, but they weren’t reeling.

3. And yes, Clark and his advisors could count. But they underestimated both the Liberals' determination to bring them down with Trudeau having resigned as leader, and how the NDP would get caught up in their own rhetoric - on their budget motion sub-amendment - to turn out en masse.

2. It's also different in that Clark and his advisors, while not eager for a new election, thought they might be able to replicate what Diefenbaker pulled off in 1958 - transforming a minority to a majority. I really hope Carney's not gambling on that scenario.
