Wanted to go somewhere in Siena today. Took a wrong turn, got lost, found this. Probably the happiest getting lost I ever experienced.
View at the old city center of Siena. In the distance you can see multiple layers of houses. You can see the cathedral and Torre del Mangia (a 102 m high tower) as prominent views in the skyline.

I made these knitting patterns of the RV Sonne and hydrographic measuring station Spiekeroog for a little joke. I am now really tempted to try it for real, although I haven't knit anything in years 😅All it needs is a little adjustment for the measuring station and it'll be good to go...

A little bit of promotion for the latest art-science/public communication project from our institute: Submersive Atmospheres: Unterwasser kino project.
For those in Oldenburg or close by from the 7th - 22nd of December, open 1-8pm everyday.

Have been thinking a lot about art and science communication lately and ways to incorporate data into pictures. Ended up with this one.
It's not just the climate stripes but I managed to get some Arctic sea ice minimum extent in as well ^^
Picture of a polar bear going through an icy landscape. The polar bear is just a silhouette with the climate stripes overlayed to it (they change from blue to red based on the average temperature over the years, with more colder, blue years in the past, and an increasing number of hot, warm years for the last couple of years). The polar bear silhouette gets thinner the warmer the years with the bones and skull showing the hotter the years get. The background and foreground represent ice and snow. The form is modeled after the data for the minimum extent of Arctic sea ice. The background is the curve for the 1 to 2 year old ice. The foreground uses the curve for the ice that is older than 4 years.

Titelfolie für meinen Vortrag in Episode 158 bei Wissenschaft fürs Wohnzimmer. Der Titel ist "Der Teufel steckt im Detail - Warum alle Modelle falsch sind und wie uns Kunst helfen kann, sie besser zu verstehen". Man sieht einen dunkel blauen Hintergrund, die Schrift ist in weiß. Am unteren Rand sind die Logos der mit meiner Arbeit verknüpften Institutionen des Hemlhotz Instituts für funktionelle marine Biodiversität (HIFMB), des Alfred Wegener Instituts (AWI) und der Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg. Im Hintergrund ist außerdem ein Bild zu sehen von einem Kaninchen, einem Fuchs und einem Greifvogel, die durch eine Struktur verbunden sind, die ein bisschen an einen Baum erinnert. Tatsächlich soll es grob Verbindungen in einem Nahrungsnetz darstellen, speziell, die Energieflüsse, die dabei entstehen, wenn Spezies sich voneinander ernähren. Ein blauer Energiefluss geht dabei über das Kaninchen hin zu dem Fuchs und einer in Pink über Kaninchen zum Greifvogel.

Ankündigung des Vortrags samt Lesung und Diskussion von Professor Doktor Christian Stöcker. Er stellt sein Buch "Männer, die die Welt verbrennen" vor. Stattfinden wird das ganze am 22.6. von 16-18 Uhr im Rahmen der Future Now Woche in der Bremer Innenstadt, im UMZU, Papenstraße 6 Man sieht ein Bild von Christian Stöcker in einem runden Rahmen. Dahinter ist ein Bild von Fabriken zu sehen. Man sieht viele Schornsteine und dunkle Wolken, die daraus empor steigen und den Himmel verdunkeln. Ankündigung für die Veranstaltung im Digital Impact Lab - Mitte, im UMZU, Papenstraße 6, Bremen. Von 16-18 Uhr findet ein Panel zum Thema Klimawandel statt. Die Einführung gibt Björn Suckow von 16:00 bis 16:15 Uhr. Danach folgt von 16:15 bis 17:30 der Vortrag samt Lesung und Diskussion von Prof. Dr. Christian Stöcker über sein Buch "Männer, die die Welt verbrennen" von 16:15 bis 17:30. Highlight sind die Mitmachstationen. Ab 14 Uhr sind diese offen zur Erkundung. Ab 17 Uhr gibt es Vorträge.
Ankündigung für die Vorträge und Diskussion zum Thema Biodiversität und Klimawandel mit den AWI Wissenschaftlern Brörn Suckow und Corina Peter. Man sieht Fotos der beiden Wissenschaftler, sowie Aufnahmen von Wollhandkrabben und Austern. Die Wollhandkrabben sind neben dem Bild von Björn Suckow zu sehen und nehmen Bezug auf das Thema seines Vortrages. Die Austern sind entsprechend neben dem Bild von Corina Peter angeortnet. Die Vorträge sind Teil der Future Now Woche in Bremen. Stattfinden werden sie am Donnerstag, dem 20.06. von 17 bis 18 Uhr, im UMZU in der Papenstraße 6 in der Bremer Innenstadt. Time for my favorite thing about this whole Eastern thing: Painting eggs! Still in my ocean research era, I guess 😂 Although I didn't have as much time for it as I wished and only managed to finish one up until now. Inspired by this vid: www.youtube.com/watch?v=viEF...
Painted easter egg. Acrylic paint on a paper mache egg. The painting shows an orange brittle star on a purple coral (imagine a warm brittle star on the cold and chalky texture of the coral). Brittle stars are closely related to starfish. This one also has five arms coming out of its central body disk. The arms wrap around the branches of the coral. The coral has little knobby polyps on its surface.
