I did once drive 40
West from MA to SF because it looked like too much snow on 70 or 80 was likely. It was interesting but the continental divide was very boring.

Summer 85 was the year before my senior year of HS. I don’t think seeing the GD would have made much difference in college selection. But I absolutely would have seen a ton of LA late 80s shows :-)
