but it seems like every candidate since Obama has been anointed off his success and so the grassroots structurally have been sidelined. Every campaign has been top-down. All Trump has had to do is pretend those folks are his whole thing.

It's a coalition of awful selfish people but also a legion of fundamentally local white people who have been systematically trained to ignore inequity. Through that frame they are not individually selfish people, and smart people calling them names is what has made them double down with their team.
