Yeah, weird reality TV too.

Maybe decades of "oh those feckless Dems got rolled again" made me cynical but it certainly seems like Buttigieg has at least internalized "hate-clicks are still clicks" as a comms strategy
November 14, 2025 at 10:03 PM
I mean do we really think it's "ignorance," that Buttigieg is simply unaware that he, as an openly gay guy, isn't going to win over many anti-trans types to his presidential campaign? I'd say pure triangulation.

Hitler won't see your weird penis jokes, but your weird-penis-having friends will!

I never finished the game because I spent hours doing "finish this before the final boss section" stuff and then lost the save game, and it wasn't worth that much drudgework to redo everything.

Simple: anything that you put in a food processor is "highly processed" and therefore unhealthy. Broccoli soup? Fuck off, it's poison. Slab of uncooked pork? Nature's Treat.

It's a gesture towards the underlying point of the refrigerator meme, which is that owning more stuff doesn't always correlate with less hardship. (E.g., you could own a cool iPhone but not afford to drive to work or go to the doctor, plus your kids are getting shown PragerU videos in public school)

Honestly NOT understanding this seems crazier to me. IF you accept the premises of anti-abortion arguments (i.e. a fetus is a person and abortion is child murder) then you'd be a moral monster NOT to lie, etc. to get laws changed.
November 7, 2025 at 5:21 PM
Also a lot of the respondents who want "less conflict" probably mean "because my side won the conflict and the other guys have to shut up/go to jail/get deported." Myself included
November 3, 2025 at 9:46 PM
Especially annoying because a ton of that truth is NOT online now. TikTok isn't paying local reporters to go to routine municipal board meetings and do all the mundane footwork to uncover corruption etc.
November 3, 2025 at 3:22 PM
I put this in the same Borgesian category as "publishers demanded that the Hungry Little Caterpillar get a stomachache as warning against gluttony," i.e. "lies that are funny/interesting enough that it's okay if they supplant the truth"
November 3, 2025 at 3:09 PM
Borges ahead of the curve once again. faculty.las.illinois.edu/rrushing/242...

"Almost immediately, reality yielded on more than one account. The truth is that it longed to yield."

I vividly remember in like 4th grade being told another kid "had sex with his pillow" and imagining him sharing a glass of wine with it at a Parisian café table like Pepe le Pew.
October 28, 2025 at 6:02 PM
Weird how the "savvy" types like Newsom and Buttigieg keep not shutting the fuck up about stuff like trans issues. It's the dumbest attempt at triangulation. "I'm not like all the other weird perverts in the party I represent" doesn't help the party and doesn't help them individually.

Anti-immigrant sentiment is inherently angry; trying to appease it by being cruel but not angry (the Biden approach) doesn't please anyone.
October 27, 2025 at 2:52 PM
which means, to answer that headline, there clearly IS something Democrats can learn: figure out things you can actually do to help your voters if elected and focus your message on that. Like, Biden talked a lot about "restoring dignity" etc. but IMO he WON by promising $2k checks!
October 24, 2025 at 5:58 PM
The funny thing is that this is probably a good thing for Mamdani's discipline on the trail. He focuses his message on stuff he can do as mayor which is mostly irrelevant outside NYC.
October 24, 2025 at 5:55 PM
When Disney loses money on a $500m Indiana Jones movie we all say "Man, they should spend money less stupidly." We don't say "movies are so expensive to make that we should all pay $50 for AAA movie tickets."
October 23, 2025 at 2:55 PM
So they are setting prices below market rate and leaving billions of dollars on the table because they're afraid of mean YouTube comments? And that if they COULD raise prices they'd use the cash to increase job security for their ununionized employees instead of, say, stock buybacks?

East India Trading Company seems like a strong contender.
October 20, 2025 at 11:36 PM
I think the @mtsw.bsky.social approach of claiming journalists "love Trump" is an implicit appeal to their personal (non-fascist) politics to try to encourage them to push back against those institutional pressures to prop up right-wing narratives.
October 20, 2025 at 5:47 PM
Easy: the parents didn't consider themselves racist. Crossing the street when you saw a black person was "common sense," cutting welfare was "teaching responsibility" and "fiscal prudence," etc. It was only "racist" if you said the underlying assumptions out loud.

His invocation of Lacan is telling - you'd know best but I don't think you're "presupposing" a post-structuralist Nom du Perre as a basis for shame, but rather contesting that account of social/psychological formation. (As plenty of people were when Lacan was still alive!)
October 15, 2025 at 2:54 PM
I mean there's certainly a level of "participating in capitalism" that merits criticism. I'd probably put "posting on twitter" low on the scale that goes from "and yet you own an iPhone, interesting" to "head lobbyist for Northrop Grumman"
October 13, 2025 at 2:04 PM
They can't accuse you of "condescending" if you're unremittingly hostile!
