RIP Leaf🐐🐐🐐

It’s kind of sad that Alamein could tell that Boy was upset and worried about the animal he hit while he was going crazy, yet he didn’t really care. Boy had to end up watching Leaf die and buried him alone.

What she said in the car, wanting to not be big poor than a bit poor (or whatever she said) kind of hits. Like dang, that’s the reality a LOT of people live in.

It’s pretty upsetting that we didn’t end our last book with a happier ending (granted there was a baby) but it’s still upsetting when I was hopeful they would find Mehdi alive and then they didn’t :,(

I think it’s interesting to see the similarity that McDonagh has with this and “Six Shooter.” Specifically the animal violence. And I think it’s also thought provoking that we typically see Irish characters be predominantly violent and portrayed as psychotic.

The way that this kid is acting is making me believe that the way he was raised and seeing so many horrid things as a child (exploded cow) is the reason he became the way he did. His view on death (especially his mother) was WHACK. I think he killed his mom!!

Brendan Gleeson is literally in everything (I know him from Harry Potter)…also the ginger chip seller is his son irl. I love them!!!
It’s always interesting to see how people make the younger generation seem insufferable compared to those who are older.

Climate change is such an important issue and it impacts us because we don’t know how or when we will perish of our own actions.

“What man wants to lay down and watch the world burn in his bedroom?” Ugly by Warsan Shire

This is such a strong way of talking about a girl, and it gives good imagery of how we are supposed to see this girl.

“After I adopted Shiraha, things went even more smoothly for me at the convenience store. But feeding him did cost me more money.” (page 113)

SHE ISNT HIS MOM!!! I swear I hate when a man treats any woman like she is his personal maid and he doesn’t have to contribute anything.

“I’d never meant to make them sad or have to keep apologizing for things I did, so I decided to keep my mouth shut as best I could outside home.” (Page 10)

This quote was very impactful to me, because the way your parents view you is sometimes how you see yourself in the world. It sucks.

“…she thought increasingly of that girl, the girl from Mykonos, and the strength of her response no longer surprised her.” (Page 200)

We know that Nadia and Saeed are not going to work out. This shows that Nadia is finally finding herself.

The differing beliefs that Saeed and Nadia have, is causing strain on their relationship. It is upsetting to see them be pushed apart, but it’s realistic for it to be happening. #bsuwlit

“How did we, as African writers, come to be so feeble towards the claims of our languages on us and so aggressive in our claims on other languages, particularly the languages of our colonisation?”

I found this line very interesting and full of depth and power.

In “New York Day Woman” we see the relationship between a mother and daughter, and how the mother behaves outside of their home. It was also interesting to see the ties between all of the stories as well. These two had mother-daughter relationships, and callbacks to the other stories.

In both of the stories, it is so interesting to see how women and gender roles are presented. In “Nineteen Thirty-Seven” the women in the prison are treated like vermin, as well as all the women murdered across the river. In “The Missing Peace” women are treated as stupid and lesser humans.

The woman in “Between the Pool and the Gardenias” has a very strong connection to children, which makes me wonder how often in countries outside of the U.S.A. little children are just left like Rose. It was so heartbreaking to read.

“What might it do to them to live in such heightened, intense surroundings day after day?”

I’ve never thought about tourism this way. There’s so many places that are so revolves around tourists and the people who actually live there are tossed to the side, only used for tourist gain really

“Will you be comforted to know that the hospital is staffed with doctors that no actual Antiguan trusts”

Tourism can be very scary. Sometimes people go somewhere that they know nothing about and then can have very horrible experiences because of their lack of knowledge

It’s interesting to see Tambu’s thoughts from the beginning of the book, to the end. Even more specific, her feelings about Nyasha have changed a great amount and in a positive light as well.

The girls (Tambu and Nyasha) view Maiguru through entirely different lenses. Tambu sees her as a traditional wife and Nyasha views her as someone who most likely wants to be free of marriage constraints. The way they view her can also contribute to how they see the rest of the world.

“Thinking about it, feeling the injustice of it, this is how I came to dislike my brother, and not only my brother: my father, my mother - in fact everybody.”

If her brother wasn’t as bad as he was, and her parents valued her a little more, would she have a different life or not?

Was Elesin always going to go through with the ritual as planned? The way we see him in jail really made me guess if the arrest had a great impact on the actions of Elesin. #bsuwlit

“I discovered that you have no respect for what you do not understand.” -Olunde

How can this quote be related to the present? How have people (specifically white people) gotten better at understanding others cultures? How have they gotten worse?
