Just back from a holiday in the Picos de Europa, Northern Spain. We were there last year as well, and one of the butterflies that we looked for then, but didn't find, was the Dusky Large Blue (Phengaris nausithous). Very happy that we found it this year!

Students from the MSc in Conservation Behaviour Class at ATU Galway were on Inis Mór this week for their Residential Field Course. We covered a lot in a few days, including butterfly surveys, moth surveys, cetacean watches and bat surveys. A great week! @atu-ie.bsky.social

Some photographs taken between the showers during fieldwork at Derryclare, Connemara yesterday. We were deploying camera traps and acoustic recorders for a research thesis that is being carried out this year by one of the students on the MSc in Conservation Behaviour at ATU @atu-ie.bsky.social

On Wednesday this week we hosted an end of project workshop at @atu-ie.bsky.social to present the results of our @epaireland.bsky.social funded project: Biological Tools to Measure the Impact of Flow on Ecology in Irish Rivers. It was an enjoyable day, with lots of useful feedback and discussions.

A good butterfly start to the New Year! We found four Brown Hairstreak (Thecla betulae) eggs during a quick search of the Blackthorn in our garden today (1st January 2025, Galway). #butterflies #insects

The Small Blue butterfly (Cupido minimus) - classified as Endangered on the Irish Red List. One of the highlights of our Residential Field Course on Inis Mór this week (for the MSc in Conservation Behaviour, Atlantic Technological University).

Students from the MSc in Conservation Behaviour @ATU_GalwayCity are on Inis Mór this week. Today we surveyed for Thrift Clearwing moths using pheromone lures, and we found it! This is the first time this species has been recorded on Inis Mór, a great result for #BiodiversityWeek
