Amy Tan was on Julia Louis-Dreyfus's podcast where they talk a lot about aging. She described investing in making her home fully accessible as like a gift to her future self or to others in her life who will eventually need it.

There's a great book written back in the 80s (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betraye...) which argues that scientists are still people and there are always some people who will respond to incentives to cheat. And this is exacerbated by pushing productivity and innovation as primary markers of success.
