There’s a haunting beauty to the old Scottish song we heard at the beginning of this service.  “The Parting Glass.” It’s a song which predates the well-known Auld Lang Syne by over 100 years and was often sung at farewells, funerals, and the end of long nights shared with friends.

When most of us think of the “Love Chapter” in the Bible, we think immediately of 1 Corinthians 13. It’s beautiful, poetic—love that is patient, kind, not envious, not proud. But on this Pentecost Sunday, I want to suggest that John 14 deserves a close second.

As we gather here today in Jerusalem, a city steeped in history and divided by conflict, it feels almost impossible to talk about love. How can we speak of love in the face of such profound strife? How can we find the words to make sense of the violence, suffering, and heartbreak that we are witnessing not only in Gaza but in so many places across the world?

Every moment of every day, we are faced with that choice. How we answer shapes our lives — our actions, words, and thoughts. We’ve all likely encountered these divisions, whether in our families, among friends, or in our workplaces. I know I have. The question today is, what do we do about it?
