Today marks 3⃣9⃣ years since the Chornobyl nuclear disaster.

Yet the threat to nuclear safety has not passed.

Russia’s illegal seizure of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant endangers millions in Ukraine and across Europe.

This cannot be ignored.

These two 24 Februaries have shaped our world.

With one, we stepped towards a more just rules-based world of coexisting sovereign states.

The other, we stepped back toward an age of empires.

If you prefer the former, history shows we must support Ukraine to defeat aggression.
February 24, 2025 at 10:06 AM
Across our country today, Estonians will celebrate Independence Day with friends & family, watching the parade, and with good food and drink.

Also, as every day, many will continue to volunteer & donate in support of Ukraine, continuously inspired by their courage of resistance.

Russia is an unreformed imperial power, proving repeatedly that it can’t be trusted.

In the absence of consequences, Moscow will disregard international law and prior agreements to continue pursuing its neocolonialist agenda.

Aggression, unpunished, emboldens more aggression.
February 24, 2025 at 10:06 AM
Many around the world stood with us when we were occupied.

Moscow failed to gain much international recognition for its forced annexation of us.

With your support, we showed Moscow’s occupation can be defeated & international law can prevail.

And so we now #StandWithUkraine.

When Estonia regained its freedom, we didn’t need to declare independence again.

We have been continuously independent since 1918. And so we declared the Nazi-Soviet Pact to be null and void.

International law prevailed - and that’s why we celebrate our Independence Day today.
February 24, 2025 at 10:06 AM
As part of Moscow’s attempt to ensure you never heard about our independence, the occupiers even demolished the balcony - and entire theatre - from which we declared independence in Pärnu.

The balcony has been rebuilt - and our entire country serves as a monument to freedom.

In the Treaty of Tartu, Soviet Russia promised to respect Estonia’s sovereignty & territorial integrity in perpetuity.

That was the first international treaty asserting that all peoples have the right to self-determination. It helped establish the principle in international law.
February 24, 2025 at 10:06 AM
Momentum was with the people who now had their own government.

Word spread rapidly across Estonia, along with copies of the declaration, that we are a Republic.

Within months, Estonia would be free from all foreign imperial forces for the first time in more than six centuries.
February 24, 2025 at 10:06 AM
Dawn rose on independent Estonia for the first time on 24 February 1918.

But there was no time to celebrate. Imperial forces were still fighting over our land.

We’d need to be clear that they were in an independent state whose people had the authority to send occupiers home.
February 24, 2025 at 10:06 AM
Never in the course of centuries have the Estonian people lost their ardent desire for Independence, began the declaration.

It asserted all peoples have the right of self-determination and that Estonia, as of that day, is an independent democratic Republic.
February 24, 2025 at 10:06 AM
Pärnu had been plunged into darkness by the bombing of a power plant.

But the people were ready for independence.

Within hours of the declaration arriving, 10k copies were printed & distributed, and crowds began gathering with blue, black & white ribbons pinned to their chests.
February 24, 2025 at 10:06 AM
Across Estonia, a National Awakening movement had been building for decades. Estonians were asserting their rights to use their language & enjoy their culture.

As the age of empires reached its crescendo with the First World War, it was clear that our path out was independence.
February 24, 2025 at 10:06 AM
We live free here in #Estonia 🇪🇪 thanks to brave men and women who stood up to tyranny and declared all peoples have the right to self-determination.

That’s why on Estonian Independence Day, as every day, we #StandWithUkraine.

Got a moment? Let us tell you a story. 🧵

#Estonia prepared for all scenarios during our synchronisation with #Europe.

But we could never have predicted that Estonia’s nature-inspired designer pylons would get so many new international fans. 🤗

Let’s build a world 🌍 where even pylons can be beautiful.

Russia is an aggressor state that can have no role in our critical systems.

By working together, all countries can break the chains of dependency on Russia, strengthen their own security, & keep building a world fit for freedom.
