Much like pickles, bottle-up your feelings long enough and they WILL inevitably spoil.

This makes me very interested in seeing Makio eventually comes to terms with her own grief.

The pickles scene demonstrates that Makio, probably subconsciously, regrets her relationship with her sister and how she could not make up with her before her passing. Her feelings were bottled-up long enough for them to spoil past the point of no return

But that's fine, isn't it? Like pickles, you can bottle your feelings up and they would only ferment, change shape and flavor but still be edible; they'd change in form but maintain a similar function and allow you to grief, so take as much time as needed....

Coming back to the PICKLES metaphor

Overlaying them visually on Makio, who is of the opinion that no one can shame you for your feelings and that you can keep them for as long as you want, screams that Makio, similarly, has grief of her own bottled-up.

This provides Asa with a sense of normalcy and gives her space to explore her emotions at her own pace. Yet, this proves a double-edged sword as we see later in episode 3

So, Makio ends up maintaining the status quo resulting in Asa *bottling up* her emotions.

- to sort out her belongings and paperwork, she would "forcefully" wake her up from a much-needed slumber; depriving Asa from much needed emotional healing.
