Surely we just continue to build on that success by accepting all who live here as English - even though most of us are in fact a mix of many things we don't even know about.

Alfred and Athelstan used "English" to overcome the tribal mix of those left over after Rome left, with Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Friesians, Norse, Danes et al. They accepted all as English, and it worked for a thousand years to the point people started to believe they were a single ethnic group.
