Ms Cunningham is asking why Ms Wishart is so confident about where Dr Upton and Ms Peggie were standing in the room on this particular evening.

The Times reported that “at least 20 Palestinian children had died from malnutrition and dehydration.” So we’re not denying that people have died, right?

No, we do not deny that people died. We just are not sure that people died from dehydration or starvation.

That report I just quoted was from March of 2024.

I see. I beg to differ with the New York Times because the New York Times bases its reports on Hamas sources. The New York Times relies heavily on stringers in Gaza that have two options: either report what Hamas wants or die, and I blame the New York Times for this. The head of the legal department of the New York Times told me, How can you blame us for writing what Hamas wants? Our journalists died because in the past they reported things that Hamas didn’t like.

CHOTINER:
This person told you this on the record?

SEGAL:
They wanted to sue me when I claimed that they relied on stringers who collaborated with Hamas.
So they told you this privately?
Yeah. You can quote it. [David McCraw, the lead newsroom lawyer at the Times, was identified to me later by Segal as the person who allegedly said this. McCraw told The New Yorker, “I never said any of that..."]

Excerpt from a statement by Keir Starmer released July 24th, 2025; five days ago:

It is hard to see a hopeful future in such dark times. But I must reiterate my call for all sides to engage in good faith, and at pace, to bring about an immediate ceasefire and for Hamas to unconditionally release all hostages. We strongly support the efforts of the US, Qatar and Egypt to secure this.
We are clear that statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people. A ceasefire will put us on a path to the recognition of a Palestinian state and a two-state solution which guarantees peace and security for Palestinians and Israelis.

The UK will recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel takes immediate steps to end the crisis in Gaza, the British government has said.

'Elopix': 'I'm a resident doctor. I think it's telling that this article is full of quotes from trust CEOs, and virtually nothing from any resident doctors. I want to make a few points:

1. For the public, the NHS is a cuddly beloved organisation. For us, it is a deeply unpleasant employer - the only game in town if you're in training in this country - where administrators with no understanding of the core clinical work treat us with contempt. You have heard the anecdotes of doctors refused leave for weddings. I have personally seen doctors prohibited from taking time out (unpaid) to spend with dying relatives with the threat of losing their training place held over them. It is telling that Wes Streeting claimed this week that he felt he'd been close to a deal to avert strikes. What was on offer? Hot meals and staff rooms. That these are the incentive should be informative as to the status quo.

2. Polly mentions our increasing pay as we progress. But that progression is far from guaranteed. After two years of fixed term contracts, doctors can apply for specialty training but this is a competitive process (against other second year doctors, and those with more experience and more polished CVs). This year, only 20% of applicants to general practice training were able to get a space. There is not enough space here to detail the unpaid & expensive work, research, exams and teaching demanded for a competitive application to training and succesful progression through it.'

'3. This is basic: read the independent pay review body report (DDRB). It sets out in black and white that since 2010 resident doctor pay has fallen behind inflation, whilst average wages in the wider economy are now above their inflation adjusted level from that time. In other words, no, we're not all in it together, and resident doctors have had one of the biggest historic paycuts second to consultant doctors. You can rightly point out that most residents weren't signing up for medicine in 2008 (although some were) but you'll have a hard time justifying paying us less for doing the same job when wages are broadly higher for the rest of the economy.

4. We all remember the clapping during covid. When I can pay my landlord with good will and public trust, we can stop campaigning for higher wages. The public has shown the hollowness of its veneration for the NHS and its staff.'

even if it is about looks, that does matter, unfortunately. Starmer is already seen as Trump's lapdog, and this isn't beating the allegations. especially when he brags about being a "hard bastard"
