Joe Cole sends transfer message to Chelsea board after Atalanta defeat
Joe Cole speaking after Chelsea’s defeat to Atalanta (Picture: TNT Sports) Joe Cole sent a clear transfer message to the Chelsea board after the club’s ‘really disappointing’ run of form continued with a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League. Just a few weeks ago Enzo Maresca’s side were tipped as dark horses in the Premier League and Champions League after an impressive 3-0 win over La Liga champions Barcelona. But Chelsea have failed to win four games in a row since thumping Barca, slipping to fifth in the Premier League, eight points behind leaders Arsenal. Joao Pedro gave Chelsea the lead at Atalanta on Tuesday night but the hosts scored two second-half goals to clinch a 2-1 win. The defeat leaves Chelsea 11th in the Champions League and they will almost certainly slip even further down the table after Wednesday’s European fixtures. ## Get personalised updates on Chelsea every day Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro’s Football Newsletter. Cole described Chelsea’s performance in Italy as ‘really disappointing’ and said it was further proof that his former club need to bolster Maresca’s squad with some experienced players. Chelsea have spent a fortune since Todd Boehly took over the club in 2022but new signings have been mainly young, promising players rather than ready-made talent. Atalanta came from behind to beat Chelsea (Picture: Getty) ‘It’s really disappointing,’ Cole told TNT Sports after Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Atalanta. ‘Chelsea matched them comfortably in the first half and took the lead. ‘But they looked shaky after that and the frailties are clearly there. It’s frustrating. ‘The performances against Barcelona and Chelsea were statements but they’ve followed that up with three below-par performances where the standards haven’t been there. Enzo Maresca after Chelsea’s defeat in Italy (Picture: Getty) ‘I just keep coming back to it, I feel like there needs to be a bit more experience in the squad to help the team get through these tricky games. ‘The coaches would have told them what to expect tonight and at Elland Road but there’s something about having an experienced player in your team to get you through. ‘Chelsea are just not quite there yet. There’s promise and some great performances but then there’s performances like tonight which drop off. Joao Pedro put Chelsea ahead (Picture: Getty) ‘It makes this weekend very, very important because that’s four games without a win now. The Everton game is must-win.’ Another former Chelsea star, Steve Sidwell, added: ‘The first half was even but they Chelsea looked disjointed in the second half and maybe that’s because of the changes made. ‘They looked a few yards off it and if you give time and space to players of this quality then you’re going to get punished.’ Chelsea’s hopes of automatic qualification in the Champions League are in the balance after a disappointing result in Italy. Maresca’s side play host to Pafos in their next European game on January 21 before visiting Serie A champions Napoli the following week. Rating Chelsea’s chances ahead of their final two games, Cole added: ‘You would expect them to beat Pafos at home and then it sets up an amazing tie at Antonio Conte’s Napoli. ‘There will be jeopardy in that game. You don’t have to finish in the top-eight but you want to avoid those extra games because the Premier League is unforgiving.’ **For more stories like this, check our sport page**. **Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on**Facebook, **Twitter and Instagram**. Gabriel Martinelli hails forgotten Arsenal star as ‘one of the best in the world’
Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli (Picture: Getty) Gabriel Martinelli has hailed Arsenal teammate Gabriel Jesus as ‘one of the best strikers in the world’ ahead of his long-awaited injury return. Jesus has been out for almost a year since suffering a serious ACL injury in Arsenal’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United back in January. But the 28-year-old is closing in on a return and has been added to Arsenal’s Champions League squad ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Club Brugge. Jesus was a key member of Mikel Arteta’s squad during his first two years at the Emirates Stadium following a £45m move from Manchester City in 2022. The Brazil international won four Premier League titles during his time at Man City and twice registered at least 20 goals in a single season. ## Get your football fix Punchy analysis, transfer talk and more from **Metro's** football experts sent straight to your inbox – sign up, it's an open goal. Jesus has not reached those numbers for Arsenal but Martinelli still views his compatriot as ‘one of the best strikers in the world’. Asked about Jesus’ imminent return to first-team action, Martinelli said: ‘It’s really good, I love him! Gabriel Jesus is closing in on a long-awaited return (Picture: Getty) ‘I always say that he is one of the best strikers in the world for me. I’m really happy to have him back. ‘It’s great to have him back, not just on the pitch but off it too because you spend less time with the team when you are injured. ‘It’s really good to have him back because he’s great to play with, he loves to link up and rotate. I hope he gets some minutes in the next game and can show his talent. > https://www.instagram.com/p/DQxQpMkDVMt/?hl=en&img_index=1 ‘He’s so experienced. He’s played so many game for City, for us, for Brazil. And he’s still so young, I say that to him. ‘It’s really good to have him back, I’m really happy and I hope he can show his talent.’ Jesus replaced Arsenal teenage sensation Max Dowman in the Champions League squad after the 15-year-old picked up an ankle injury while playing for the U21 team at the weekend. **Sorry, the video was not found** Arteta will also be without Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard for Arsenal’s trip to Club Brugge, while William Saliba and Gabriel remain sidelined. ‘Max picked up an injury and he had to come off, we did some scans and he’s going to be out for a few weeks,’ Arteta said at his pre-match press conference. ‘Declan is ill. He was quite sick after the [Aston Villa] game so he hasn’t travelled. ‘Leo is out too, he picked up another knock where he had the issue, I don’t expect he will be out for long but he’s out for tomorrow.’ Arsenal are top of the Champions League group phase ahead of their clash with Club Brugge, who are 27th in the 36-strong table. But Arteta’s side did lost last time out, suffering only their second defeat of the season against Aston Villa and ex-Arsenal manager Unai Emery. Belgian side Brugge won their Champions League opener against Monaco but have since lost to Atalanta, Bayern Munich and Sporting Lisbon. They shared an entertaining 3-3 draw with Barcelona in their other game. **For more stories like this, check our sport page**. **Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on**Facebook, **Twitter and Instagram**. Donald Trump says Europe is ‘decaying’ due to ‘weak’ and ‘politically correct’ leaders
Donald Trump did not single out any European leaders in his interview, except Sir Sadiq Khan (Picture: EPA) US President Donald Trump has launched a dramatic new attack on his country’s allies in Europe, saying its ‘weak’ leaders are letting their nations be ‘destroyed’. In a new interview, Trump also let rip on one of his old favourite targets – London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan, who he describes as ‘horrible, vicious, disgusting’. And he also took the opportunity to call for elections in Ukraine as he accused Volodymyr Zelensky of not reading US peace proposals. The President’s latest outburst comes at a tense time for transatlantic relations, with negotiations over an end to Russia’s invasion proving sticky. Speaking to Politico, Trump said there was ‘no question’ that Russia is in the stronger position in those talks as it is ‘a much bigger country’. He said: ‘It’s a big problem for Europe. And they’re not handling it well.’ Asked about new security strategy his government unveiled last week, which argues the US must ‘cultivate resistance’ across Europe to prevent its ‘civilisational erasure’, Trump argued if the continent stays on its current course, ‘many of those countries will not be viable countries any longer’. He said: ‘I think they’re weak, but I also think that they want to be so politically correct. ‘I think they don’t know what to do. Europe doesn’t know what to do.’ Sir Keir Starmer met Volodymyr Zelensky on Downing Street yesterday (Picture: Wiktor Szymanowicz/Future Publishing via Getty Images) Particular ire was saved for Sir Sadiq, who the President raised unprompted several times in the interview. Trump told the news site: ‘He’s a horrible mayor. He’s an incompetent mayor, but he’s a horrible, vicious, disgusting mayor. ‘I think he’s done a terrible job. London’s a different place. I love London. I love London. And I hate to see it happen.’ ## Latest London news * Two men charged over ‘pepper spray attack and robbery’ at Heathrow Airport * Inside the mission to stop illegal e-bikes from whizzing around London * London Tube fares set to rise by 5.8% next year while train tickets are frozen _**To get the latest news from the capital visit Metro's** London news hub._ Elsewhere, he vaguely accused Sir Sadiq of having ‘a totally different ideology of what he’s supposed to have’. Sir Sadiq has been a focus of the President’s rage for the best part of a decade (Picture: Daniel Ramalho/AFP) Speaking separately to Politico, the Mayor said: ‘I literally have no idea why President Trump is so obsessed with this mayor of London. ‘I’m not sure what he’s got against a liberal, progressive, diverse, successful city like London.’ Previously, the President brought up Sir Sadiq in a rambling speech at the United Nations, accusing him of wanting to institute Sharia law in London. In response to that tirade, the Mayor told **Metro** : ‘I think he’s got a crush on me. It’s either that or he believes in giving me squatters’ rights inside his head.’ Negotiations over an end to the war in Ukraine have stepped up in recent weeks, though little progress appears to have been made on the two sides’ irreconcilable red lines. Zelensky said today he has ‘no right’ to surrender any of his country’s land under Ukrainian or international law, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has insisted the Donbas region in the east is handed to Russia. Ukraine is expected to submit its latest peace proposals to the US as soon as today. ******Get in touch with our news team by emailing us atwebnews@metro.co.uk.****** **For more stories like this,****check our news page**. Man Utd and Liverpool’s £65m target ‘tempted’ by Arsenal transfer
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have become a tempting proposition for players (Picture: Getty) Arsenal and two other Premier League giants have been given major hope of signing Antonio Semenyo from Bournemouth. Semenyo has developed into one of the most exciting players in the Premier League since his £10m move from Bristol City in 2023. The 25-year-old scored 11 goals in the English top-flight last season and is on course to surpass that figure this term, with six to his name from 11 games. A number of top clubs were placed on high alert when it emerged that Semenyo has a £65m release clause which can be activated during the January transfer window. Tottenham have expressed interest in a January deal but The Sun say Semenyo is ‘hesitant’ to join Thomas Frank’s side, just as he was last summer. ## Get personalised updates on Manchester United every day Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro’s Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. But a move away from Bournemouth still looks likely, either next month or in the summer, and it is claimed Semenyo would be ‘more tempted’ by offers from Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester City. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have become an increasingly appealing destination for players – the Gunners are currently top of both the Premier League and Champions League. Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo (Picture: Getty) Arsenal are yet to show strong interest in Semenyo but could consider a move to bolster Arteta’s squad ahead of a vitally important second-half to the season. The Gunners would no doubt relish the opportunity to beat north London rivals Tottenham to another transfer, having hijacked their deal for Eberechi Eze last summer. Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City are all reportedly ‘monitoring’ Semenyo’s situation at Bournemouth ahead of possible moves in January. Tottenham are interested in a January deal (Picture: Getty) Semenyo has long been earmarked as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool and the Egyptian’s future at Anfield is far from clear following his explosive interview. Salah has been left out of Liverpool’s squad for the midweek Champions League game after accusing the club of ‘throwing him under the bus’ and revealing his relationship with Arne Slot had broken down. While Semenyo is reportedly interested in joining the reigning Premier League champions, he has previously admitted it would be a ‘dream come true’ to play for Arsenal, the club he supported growing up. Mohamed Salah could be on his way out of Liverpool (Picture: Getty) ‘I am an Arsenal fan,’ he told The Athletic in an interview in October 2024. ‘I don’t conflict the two with my job. It is great to play against Arsenal, a team I have watched all my life and I want to play for the top clubs as well. In order for that to happen I need to prove it.’ Asked if joining Arsenal would be a dream come true, he added: ‘Yeah, any team that plays Champions League, Europa (League) — that’s the aim. ‘I know that’s not going to come with a click of my fingers, it’s going to take some time. It’s going to take goals. ‘It’s going to take a lot of consistent performances. But I’ve worked all my life for that and I’m just going to continue working hard. That’s my mentality.’ Semenyo’s current club Bournemouth are 13th in the Premier League ahead of Monday’s trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. Semenyo’s national team Ghana were drawn to face Thomas Tuchel’s England at next summer’s World Cup. **For more stories like this, check our sport page**. **Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on**Facebook, **Twitter and Instagram**. Carlo Ancelotti names club who will deny Arsenal the Champions League
Ancelotti is backing one of his former clubs to go all the way in Europe (Picture: Getty) Carlo Ancelotti is backing Arsenal to end their long wait for a Premier League title – but believes the Gunners will fall short in the Champions League. Mikel Arteta’s side have enjoyed a thrilling start to the season in Europe and domestically -still two points clear at the summit of English football despite defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday. In the Champions League, they have been perfect, winning five games from five having beaten Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich in that run, conceding just once. Arsenal have never won the biggest prize in club football but are among the favourites to lift the trophy in Budapest in May. No other manager has won the Champions League more than Ancelotti, winning the competition twice with AC Milan and three times with Real Madrid. ## Get your football fix Punchy analysis, transfer talk and more from **Metro's** football experts sent straight to your inbox – sign up, it's an open goal. And the current Brazil boss is backing his old side to deliver on Europe’s biggest stage once again. Asked by Ally McCoist for TNT Sport who is thinks will win the Champions League this season, Ancelotti responded: ‘My Real Madrid.’ Ancelotti backing Real to win a 16th Champions League (Picture: Getty Images) Focus then turned to the Premier League, where Ancelotti managed Chelsea and Everton. Arteta’s side have sat top for much of the current campaign but a draw away to Chelsea at the end of November and Saturday’s defeat at Villa Park has allowed Manchester City to close the gap. Arsenal have finished runners up the last three seasons and despite their recent slip-up, Ancelotti is backing them to get the job done. Arsenal are still top of the pile in the Premier League and in Europe(Picture: Getty) Ancelotti counts a number of Premier League stars in his Brazil team including Tottenham striker Richarlison and Manchester United midfielder Casemiro and is eager for all his players to do well this term heading into next summer’s World Cup. Asked who will win the Premier League, he responded: ‘Arsenal. I am a fan of the Premier League. But I think Arsenal started really well, they are a fantastic team, a really solid team. ‘And of course I am a supporter of Arsenal because I have Gabriel but I support Tottenham too because we have Richarlison, I support United, I support the Brazilian players.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source
