MethaneSAT
@methanesat.bsky.social
First methane-tracking satellite launched by an NGO. While contact is lost, the mission continues: advancing tech, sharing data, cutting emissions. A project of Environmental Defense Fund.
🔎 New MethaneSAT insights reveal a striking contrast between states in the Permian.

In New Mexico, which has strong methane protections, methane intensity is less than half that of operations in Texas.

@envdefensefund.bsky.social President Fred Krupp reflects on MethaneSAT and why bold, independent climate action matters. In 1 year, we:
• Detected methane at 2 ppb
• Mapped oil & gas emissions
• Traced them to the source

The mission continues. More @weforum.org:

The @iea.org’s 2025 methane tracker shows fossil fuel emissions are ~80% higher than official reports.

Among the satellites informing the report: MethaneSAT.

Thanks partners like @bezosearthfund.org, we can deliver actionable data on where emissions are coming from. 🚀

What does it mean to "see" methane from space? At #SEJ2025, Steven Hamburg said: “We want to know where [methane] came from—not where it is.”

By automating this process, MethaneSAT tracks the source, not just the methane concentrations in the atmosphere. That's a game-changer. @sejorg.bsky.social

In this TED Talk, Scientist Daniel Zavala-Araiza explains how satellite technology accelerates methane mitigation at scale. 🛰️

With high-resolution satellite data, we can pinpoint high-emitting regions and prioritize emissions reductions where they have the greatest impact.

Methane emissions aren’t static—they shift:
For example, in Turkmenistan, we detected 203 tonnes per hour in July 2024, but emission patterns changed significantly by October.

Continuous monitoring is essential for effective mitigation 💡
