We need a shared infrastructure that doesn’t permit this kind of centralized control. We can disrupt oligopolistic control over software through user choice (e.g., preferring and installing free software), building good protocol frameworks (e.g., demanding tools that use open standards for interoperability), and through regulatory intervention (e.g., breaking up monopolistic actors, or mandating that an OS must allow sideloading, as the EU did with the DMA). The device you carry with you that is privy to much of your life should be under your control, not under the control of an abusive government or corporations that do its bidding.

Is there a viable #federated alternative to CDNs like CloudFlare? I mean, a CDN is a federated network inside, it just looks monolithic, so surely a community-run alternative is possible?

Parking on pavements is sociopathic. Parking in cycle lanes is sociopathic. Parking in front of traffic lights is sociopathic. Obstructing a bus route is sociopathic. So this Comax driver in #southampton can be proud to be top of the high-score table.
White van marked "Comax", phone number 01202 684111, is parked fully across a pavement at a busy road junction leavinf only enough room for an able-bodied slim person to squeeze past, outer wheels parked on the road edge of a cycle lane, blocking sight of traffic lights.
