OTD in 1579 Annys/Agnes Woodward married her late husband’s former apprentice, Philip Henslowe. www.kingswomen.org celebrate her 445th wedding anniversary in today’s blogpost.

It’s a term Philip Henslowe used when hiring people (generally, actors) for a fixed term and with the payment of a small sum to seal the contract. See Henslowe’s Diary ff.230 and 231v for examples. I assume the fixed term and payment were standard features.
