Turning the Grey Green🌿 We create bespoke green solutions for public, business and residential spaces 👉 www.meristemdesign.co.uk
Planting on Amhurst Road @hackneycouncil is progressing fast despite the wet weather. The team has powered through with planting, prep and weeding as the #raingardens take shape. New street trees are in, helping build the green corridor between Hackney Downs and Hackney Central.

How do #raingardens transform the public realm? Acting as natural filtration systems #SuDS:

💧 Slow the flow of water
🐝 Support #pollinators
🌿 Improve #airquality
🌸 Add colour & texture
🌱 Reduce pressure on drainage systems

Only 33% of children in England have outdoor lessons (excluding PE) most days. 🌿 Our nature workshops teach kids about plants & biodiversity before getting hands-on with planting 🌱💚 Get in touch & help your students become the next generation of gardeners!

Five months of colour and growth at our Downham Road #raingardens in Hackney! 🌿 Planted in May with @hackneycouncil as part of plans for a greener borough, they’re already brightening streets & supporting wildlife. We went back in October to see how they’d bloomed. 🌷 #SuDS

Since the installation, the 3ft6 team says "the café has grown into more of a destination. Rather than simply popping in for takeaway, customers now feel encouraged to stay and engage with one another. This has enriched the sense of community."

What happens when one of the smallest cafés in the world gets a #parklet?

This summer, Meristem delivered a parklet for 3ft6, a community-focused cafe based in Redfield, #Bristol. The café acts as a hub for neighbours and locals to connect and grab a coffee.

New #LivingWall in Chelsea 🌿
We’ve turned a blank courtyard into a lush green space — full of colour and texture.
Built-in irrigation keeps it thriving year-round while boosting air quality & biodiversity.

How do you uplift an underutilised residential green space?

Our #landscaping work at South Countess Road with Waltham Forest Council brought #raingardens, gabion seating & new pathways together - boosting biodiversity and improving drainage.

It's #internationaldayofclimateaction ! We are tackling the climate crisis starts at street level with #SuDS systems that manage surface water, reduce flooding and add green to our cities. Local action, global impact 🌎 💧 🌱

Working with @camdencouncil.bsky.social, we delivered rain gardens linking Euston to St Pancras 💧
These planted spaces manage surface water, capture carbon & boost biodiversity - turning busy routes into cleaner, greener, more enjoyable streets 🌱

73% of households in Somers Town & St Pancras don’t own a car 🚶♀️🚲

We loved bringing to life this brand new nature garden in Maidenhead with @RBWM. With the help of local primary school children and our installation team, we planted a space that focuses on community wellbeing and supports biodiversity! 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 🌿

Autumn tip: Add a layer of mulch 🍂
It protects roots, locks in moisture, and keeps soil healthy through the colder months.
Small step now = stronger growth later.

#SuDS don’t just need to be built - they need to be cared for 🌿 Without maintenance, #raingardens can fail. However with it, they thrive - managing floods, supporting #biodiversity, and creating vibrant spaces.

We recently used this system at Redlees Park in @hounslowcouncil.bsky.social, where excavation depths were limited.

Our solution: a flood-resilient, biodiverse and welcoming entrance that manages surface water sustainably - and shows how SuDS can adapt to modern urban constraints. 🌱

We developed the Hybrid SuDS Planter - a shallow, modular system that delivers the same benefits as a rain garden, without deep excavation.🌿 Each planter has a base that captures and stores rainwater, before it slowly rises through the soil to feed the plants and reduce runoff.

What can you do when you can’t dig deep enough for a #raingarden? 💧
In cities packed with utilities and hard surfacing, traditional #SuDS can be hard to install. Here’s how we solved that challenge 👇

In a city of hard surfaces, nature-based design is transforming London

Marvin Street in @hackneycouncil.bsky.social + Kenilworth Green in @mertoncouncil.bsky.social show how grey, impermeable spaces can become green, flood-resilient places💧

💧66% of primary and 83% of secondary schools in England are at risk of #flooding.

That’s why pupils across London are planting #SuDS planters and #raingardens - learning how green spaces can protect their playgrounds.
