#MWE Day 28: Found out about her through a MWE post. I'm really enjoying listening to her. Delivering scathing lyrics with a certain clarity and confidence achieved by drawing from her own lived experiences. Sister Nancy, she is one in a three million (more like billion)!

#MWE Day 27: I found out about her through the Weird Fishes cover she did and loved her rendition. She's got a very expressive voice and the minimalist instrumentation does the best to highlight that on this EP. Except for the closer, Final Form which is the heaviest, she still sounds fantastic tho

#MWE Day 26: Other than the embarrassing band name, Pity Sex, which I am drawn too. Their music is totally up my alley. Love the guitar melodies and both the vocalists suit the music so well. Delivering emo lyrics that vividly construct their miseries and frustrations.

#MWE Day 25: Wanted to listen to Still Blunted but picked this EP instead. This electro-jazz fusion sounds quite cool. Catchy, groovy, and laid-back. If the rest of their music is like this, I'm very much interested

#MWE Day 24: Bass virtuoso, child prodigy, Mohini Dey has me gobsmacked. From the first track, In-N-Out, I knew I was in for a wild ride. You can hear the varying influences of metal, prog rock, classical and jazz music on the album, and she's shredding the bass throughout! Happy to Slap It slapssss

#MWE Day 23: One of the few NYC hip-hop groups doing some of the freshest grittiest genre-defying forward thinking stuff, à la Das Racist (Fuck Kool A.D.). Sporting killed on production. I imagine their live shows must have been pretty high octane. Late to the party but I'm glad I made it here :)

#MWE Day 22: Fantastic debut! She's played all the instruments in most of the songs (drums, bass, guitar, synths). And if that's not mind-blowing enough, her voice -which is another instrument in itself- is amazing too! A great lyricist. Run and tell everybody that Lætitia is a massive talent!

#MWE Day 21: In the words of Heems,
"Shouts out Redinho, yo, he a redhead
Plus he sampled a bird on the tune
To me yeah he sounds like, yo, a red-throated loon
Yellow-billed loon, pacific loon, maybe it's a common or arctic loon"
But in all seriousness, what a unique sound. A master of his craft.

#MWE Day 20: A pandemic album, it reminds us of living through lockdowns, the uncertainty and gloom. That is juxtaposed against the backdrop of the CAA protests -where thousands would show up in solidarity. Like in 'hum Dekhenge' as the tune plays on flute over field recordings of the protest site.

#MWE Day 19: This gives Amit Trivedi - DevD vibes. It's cinematic, dramatic, and a decent concept album. Some cool collabs on this too, s/o Circle Tone of RUAB fame. I really like Dispersion, especially the way it ends.

#MWE Day 18: Aywy seems similar to - crate diggers - Lapgan and babloo babylon. A savant of sampling South Asian/Bollywood music and incorporating them to make some nostalgia infused disco influenced hip-hop and dance beats. I mean Mac Miller rap over Zindagi Meri Dance Dance, can you imagine?!

#MWE Day 17: Picked the Little Whales EP, played the 1st song, found out about vocalists hardcore band and now I am almost done listening to the discog of Death By Fungi. When asked what makes you happy? He says, nothing these days. Music epitomises that too. Angry, energetic, with few melodic bits

#MWE Day 16: What can be cooler than three bassists coming together to form a band?! (Sadly, only a duo for this EP). The opener has bass playing over a bassline! 'Are You Have You' is hilarious with its sarcastic and on the nose lyrics. But it doesn't hit the highs of their eponymous debut

#MWE Day 15: Listening to self-titled albums continues (3rd in a row). Unintentionally! Everything about this band is so cool. This music is totally my jam. Each and every song is really good, leaving you craving for more. Brilliant musicians! But no new music since this album came out :(

#MWE Day 14: More a collection of ideas than fully fleshed out songs but they sound good. You can hear the Joy Division influence on 'Try and stop me'. With nothing apart from this EP and a video online, I doubt they still make music. But I really wish they still did

#MWE Day 13: He's got a great knack for integrating weird sounds and melodies into his beats, most evident in Thursday 5am (the sound of someone sweeping the streets eventually morphs into the sound of a cymbal). Really digging the album after repeated listens. Fountain of Love is a great song!

#MWE Day 12: Idk what made me pick this one, the cover art, the artist name, no idea (ofc, was part of a list). Just hit play. Didn't even read the name of the EP till the 3rd song. Looked up the meaning of Anhedonia, it was such a serendipitous moment. What a gift this EP is ❤️‍🩹! Distorted bass ftw

#MWE Day 11: Slipped Disc has been on heavy rotation ever since I heard it on High Maintenance many years ago. Never listened to much else by her and thought I'd give MN a go. And I am floored! Philippe Le Mongne is phenomenal on the album. Funky, groovy. How it isn't more popular is puzzling

#MWE Day 10: Arivu and Rohith Abraham from The Casteless Collective come together to make a banger album! The beats compliment Arivu's fierce delivery perfectly. Yet to explore the lauded socio-political themes and lyrical content thoroughly but Arivu's mastery over words is nonetheless apparent

#MWE Day 9: Her flow and delivery is excellent! Bond Fission is such a good opener, a great introduction to her rhymes and wordplay plus the beat by Dan Pearson is top. You can see her versatility on this EP, from her incisive raps to her singing on Peace of Mine, what a talent!

#MWE Day 8: Good album, love the guitars. The fact that their demos played a part in Miti Adhikari's decision to move back to India is so fascinating (demos must have held plenty of promise!). Coupled with their frequent disbanding, can see why they have a cult status in the underground music scene

#MWE Day 7: Mixing so many different styles and genres make for some chaotic goodness. Overall, the cacophony of sounds work so well. When the River Runs Dry feels like a palette cleanser until the Sax solo begins towards the end. I for one am excited to hear their debut LP coming out next month!
February 9, 2025 at 2:15 PM
#MWE Day 6: What a record! So much fun from start to finish. Lyrics too on the nose but the duo have got a great sense of humour. They make a mishmash of so many genres slap so hard. So happy this is my entry point to 100 gecs. I also now have a song for when I go to the dentist, and win the lottery

#MWE Day 5: This EP feels contemplative yet is groovy in equal measure. The melodies are (re)constructed so well to create a sense of familiarity. But the gloomy disposition of the music becomes quite apparent with the sample at the beginning of L.o.v.e, which is also my favourite. Good stuff!

#MWE Day 4: The whole SkyRabbit ecosystem is fantastic. Carefully crafted loops and melodies set the mood really well and grab your attention, painting vivid pictures in your imagination. Loved the sound design. The album progresses so well and the percussions compliment the grooves perfectly.
