Rounding out my list of #Michigan off-the-beaten path is the Brooklyn Street Local LLC in Corktown, #Detroit. (I didn't take better pictures, because I was too busy enjoying the food.)

Third on my list of #Michigan hors chemin: #Muskegon.

There's nothing like #LakeMichigan during the summer, but I can do without the crowds. Muskegon gives you two phenomonal options in close proximity: Muskegon State Park and Duck Lake State Park.

#2 on my list of #Michigan summer 2025 favourites: #QahwahHouse of Grand Rapids, a welcome oasis on the city's northeast corner—a respite from the endlessly unimaginative big box chains that dominate the suburbs, with late night hours to boot.

At the top of my list of #Michigan summer favourites: the #NorthCountryTrail. Like a Narnian otherworld, you hardly know it's there, but open the door and you'll find you've tumbled into a magical world right on your doorstep.

I recently unearthed my high school journal, and turned the pages all the way back to the start: August 25, 2004.

My list of goals for my junior year of high school included everything from beating video games, to proselytizing.

Looking back two decades, I wonder what chance "a skinny kid with a funny name" ever had appealing to our better angels when we were already stewing knee-deep in decades of me-first materialism. It felt like a moment of transformation. Was it just an illusion?

What started as a bit of a rant turned into a lament.

That's the power of writing. It forces us to sit down with our thoughts and make sense of them. It makes us face what we're really feeling and name it.

Here's part 2 in Americans are the frog in the pot:

Wow! What a nice surprise when I opened Ninnau this morning. I knew they had picked up the article, but I didn't expect to be on the cover.

If you'd like to read the article (without squinting), you can check in out on @nation.cymru:

Welcome to the next installment in Remade: An anthology of the world's end & new beginnings. The new beginnings are on the way. I promise. But for now, it's still the end of the world.

I came across the remarks I gave at the 2009 #LGBTQ Panel at Calvin University.

Most of all, I'm grateful to be living the quiet life I craved all those years ago: to be married to a wonderful man, to have the support of a loving family, to have my "square inch."

Between dissertations, I'm reconnecting with the joy of reading—and for me, that means revisiting some old favorites: Susan Cooper's Over Sea, Under Stone, and Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain.

Grand Rapids is weird. Today it’s all breweries, hipsters, and overpriced apartments. But growing up, it was Bland Rapids: so boring that corporations would come to town to trial new products. If the straight-laced people of Grand Rapids, will buy it, anyone will!

A week in #Wales by train! (And a bus ride, or two.)

Working on a follow-up post for a week in Wales by car. What did I miss that I need to include?

I fear that what I saw at Toronto Pearson was a vision of the future: One in which travel and mobility become a privilege of the elite, the overwhelmingly white business class unaffected and unconcerned about travel restrictions and civil rights.

In Canada's busiest airport, I've found a quiet corner. Tables empty. Outlets free. Empty seats at the bar. Just workless workers and captains of industry, keeping one another company in a world that’s waiting, between resignation and rebellion, for whatever’s next.

Counting down the days until we can go back has me daydreaming about traveling across Wales. 🐉

Some of my favorite moments were undoubtedly crossing Cymru by car, but it's absolutely possible to make a solid and spectacular week by train and by bus. #travel #wales
