It's not Sci-Fi, but I'd also recommend the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. Takes place on a planet where Cat 5+ hurricanes sweep across the entire planet every 1 to 2 weeks. So the landscape has trees that fall over to protect themselves and grass that can retract into the rock landscape

The Red Rising series is fantastic. The first book is a little Hunger Games-ish (terrible description, but the easiest way to describe it) but it takes off so quick and hard after that. Epic space battles, and effectively a giant class war since society in it has been put into a caste system

She knows that if she does she'll get punted in the next election as no MLA is going to vote for separatism. So she's going to waste millions of dollars on a referendum that has all but already been decided by the Forever Canadian petition

Albertan here and Smith is terrified of the separatist monster she has created. She thought she could handle them and use them as a weapon against Ottawa. Only now that they've slipped her leash, she's scared shitless of them. That's why she won't hold a legislature vote

Except it's not going to happen. Separatist at BEST have 30% of the population, and half of those only want to use separation to make a point to Ottawa, and not actually leave. So you're looking at 15% of the province being serious in leaving

It's so frustrating knowing that Smith could end all the separatist talk by holding a legislature vote of the Forever Canadian petition, but she's too scared for her own political future to do so since she knows no MP is going to vote to separate
