It is an extremely violent indoctrination and way of life that many people are involuntarily forced into. To “leave the gang” you must leave the country, hence requesting asylum in the United States. Why this is never discussed I just don’t understand.

What people don’t seem to acknowledge is that you don’t have a job interview or request to join these types of gangs. They select you by threatening your family, kidnapping a family member and forcing you to accept the gang tattoo.
