Never be afraid to move on. We don't take it personally. You won't hurt our feelings. But be sure that you are moving on due to bad fit and NOT because they bring discomfort. Therapy is work. It is going to be awkward and uncomfortable and even painful.

The best advice I can give is to ask before your first session what their specialty is, then try it. If it isn't working, SAY THAT. Some can shift gears, others will point you to people they trust that can do the other methods.

I am a Humanistic therapist. We acknowledge that this is a conversation and a shared exploration. We aren't the experts - one of my initial statements is "I don't know you. I'm just a voice outside your head."

Cognitive is based on structured behavioral changes - basically like the old joke about "it hurts when I do this - so stop doing that" school. It can be very fast, and provides relief from maladaptive behaviors.

Humanistic is slower, and examines your history and the Why of your behavior patterns.

If only I had an easy answer! The first step is to get started with someone. You don't know what kind of therapist works for you yet. Ask what type of therapist someone is - they normally align with Cognitive or Humanistic.
