Just so it’s clear, the government wanted to oversee hiring and employment at a *private* institution in order to implement a purity test. When the institution refused, they took away money for life saving research (cancer etc).

That’s some fascist shit.

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

Brown also warns against *domestic travel* -since it's unclear what ICE will do.

Social media is a collective trap: Users feel compelled to stay engaged, even if they hate it.

The majority would prefer to live in a world without Tik Tok or Instagram (which currently have 3.5 billion users).

There is massive grade inflation at top universities—and it’s getting worse.

Grade inflation is occurring at most colleges, spiked during the pandemic, and is lower in the sciences.

When the average GPA is 3.7 the grades essentially become meaningless. www.nytimes.com/2023/12/05/n...
Nearly Everyone Gets A’s at Yale. Does That Cheapen the Grade?
A report found that close to 80 percent of grades were in the A range last academic year. A pandemic-era bump has stuck.

This is 100% real. A prof. has every incentive just to hand out A's because doing otherwise makes your life miserable for no reason. The only reason I don't is b/c 1. I'm teaching a required course and want to select for better students and 2. it kills the spark in the 10-15% with actual promise.

And the CDU makes the same historical mistake of slowing legitimizing the right-extreme AfD.
