Curly, I think, has a kind personality. 'Sweet' if you will. He doesn't like being the bad guy, especially to someone who is his long time friend.

I think Curly doesn't WANT to look back. Looking back, to him doesn't matter. He just wants to move forward, to crush the next ladder, to continue reaching the highest rung. Then he gets bored, feels the ladder breaking under him. He jumps ship to the next thing.
