Anthrocon 2012 and the Ugly Bug Ball Alone in the world in every sense but the literal (Technically, I lived with my sister’s Dad) In a half finished basement cove of Darkness and screens I eked out an existence But shrieked at the sight Of our tenant centipedes But once in a state of panic about the need to call my dying grandma, I watched the anxious scurry of A centipede across an outlet And in that cyborg calm of The breathing exercises My Zoloft dealer Taught me, I saw that this creature was me. I took the Mega Bus to Pittsburgh My first drug-free ride in years I had studied Google Maps My hotel was up a hill Out of a tunnel, very close by Up to my room I’d sewn it for months My exoskeleton of felt Out I went to find my peace And finally be the centipede The dog folk, they were out en masse They growled as I scuttled past The cat folk purred inside the lobby Where pouncing me became the hobby A wolf and dragon I passed by Just cursed me like some afterlife I’ll admit it, I wept in an alley, Nowhere near that hopeful river, My thud upon a shattered pallet When suddenly, eight red legs of of starving spider The sweetest venom on my lips

Unveiling Unexpected Similarities: Convergent Evolution of Mammary Glands and Plant Epidermis Abstract Human mammary glands, responsible for milk production, are composed of specialized epithelial tissue. This study presents a novel perspective, proposing a surprising homology between this tissue and the plant epidermis. Through comparative analysis of gene expression profiles and developmental pathways, we demonstrate remarkable convergence in the underlying mechanisms for structure and function. These findings challenge traditional views of animal-plant divergence and offer exciting possibilities for biomimetic applications. Introduction The concept of homology, shared ancestry reflected in similar structures, is a cornerstone of biology. However, clear distinctions exist between animal and plant kingdoms. Here, we challenge this paradigm by exploring a potential case of convergent evolution – the independent development of similar structures in distantly related organisms. Our focus is the human mammary gland, a specialized structure of the integumentary system. The functional epithelium, responsible for milk production, arises from ectoderm, the outermost embryonic germ layer. Interestingly, plants also possess an outer protective layer – the epidermis. Both tissues share a common function: interaction with the external environment for exchange of nutrients and information. Materials and Methods We employed a multi-pronged approach.
