I’m not picky on how you pronounce my name, but if you really want to say it correctly, ask Pierre Barrouillet or libradunn1@bsky.social to demo.
My yard just made the local news’ list of Halloween yard haunts. Can I add this to my CV?

Had the urge to remind Apple of the correct name for the Gulf of Mexico, but it won’t let me send the issue.

Waking up at 5:30 am to a severe thunderstorm with 80+ mph winds and was not exactly the most relaxing way to start the weekend. But @ketv7.bsky.social’s (all women) weather team, lead by @caitlinharveywx.bsky.social made for good company.

When your entire office can be seen from the hallway, you need a way to let your colleagues know that you are okay… the faraway look on your is because you are connecting with scientists all over the world at the @wmsymposium.bsky.social. Oh! And please do not disturb

Hal and his sister Hero came to live with us about a year ago after being with the same human for over a decade. Hal just dragged my sweatshirt to a box and made himself a little bed. I think this cat finally feels at home.

May 31, 2025 at 1:44 AM
Drs. Tiana Cowan, Ryan McCreery, and Lori Leibold present a new tool, the Children’s English and Spanish Speech Recognition (ChEgSS) test which will soon be available to facilitate speech perception testing with bilingual children.
May 30, 2025 at 8:24 PM
Dr. Dawna Lewis reviews evidence for remote microphone (RM) use with children whose hearing is audio-metrically typical but who have other special listening needs.
May 30, 2025 at 8:17 PM
In our final talk before lunch, Dr. Karen Muñoz from @utahstate.bsky.social reviews strategies audiologists can use to support parents as they learn about their child’s hearing aid (One communication strategy capitalizes on CHUNKING which makes my working memory heart so very happy)
May 30, 2025 at 6:17 PM
Our next speaker, Dr. Kathryn Wiseman, tackled the challenging question of when to transition a pediatric hearing aid user into cochlear implant candidate.
May 30, 2025 at 4:19 PM
PAT Conference keynote speaker Dr. Susan Scollie from @westernuwin.bsky.social presents a historical review of the major advances in pediatric hearing aid fitting and highlights gaps that need to be addressed for future research.
May 30, 2025 at 3:18 PM
We open with a tribute to the conference’s namesake, the late Dr. Pat Stelmachowicz, who was a pioneer in conducting pediatric hearing research specifically to inform clinical practice.

As a side note, Lee is a brilliant scientist and phenomenal speaker. If I was still on X, I’d show receipts. If you are looking for Dev Psych or Comm Sci faculty, let me know and I’ll pass that position along. Photos of Lee gesticulating for extra traction:

Dr Jessica Mattingly described a pilot study to combat listening fatigue in children with hearing loss. Some children reported benefits after a single session of yoga. The hope is that restoring cognitive energy will benefit academic outcomes.

Dr. Lee Evans presents data that many early numeracy skills develop with support from language. Unfortunately, for children who are deaf and hard of hearing, language delays appear to lead to delays in numeracy.

Patients with long-term unilateral hearing loss (UHL) make errors when deciding where a sound is coming from. However, they make fewer errors than listeners using an earplug to mimic UHL. Thus, overtime patients learn new ways to use cues that typically require two ears.

In teenagers, testosterone levels do not predict actual cognitive performance but it is related to brain activation during the cognitive tasks. This work is a first step in understanding how hormone changes during adolescence lead to changes in brain activation and neural organization.

The human body naturally produces endocannabinoids- molecules that help regulate functions from hunger to attention. Chronic cannabis use, beyond what is made by the body, is related to cortical thinning, poor communication between cortical brain regions, and changes in other brain molecules.

Dr. Brittany Williams describes a new project examining whether working memory and attention influence if people capitalize on spatial release from masking (SRM). SRM is important for people with hearing loss for whom separating speech from noise is particularly challenging. @brittwilli.bksy.social

Children w/ language problems struggle to coordinate speech movements when saying new sentences. Their sentences often have incorrect syntax but not semantics. Motor coordination & syntax require sequencing (either muscles or words) suggesting a broad sequencing problem.
