Great @archhfund.org.uk event @buildingcentre.bsky.social last night, featuring excellent research insights from @bennettinstitute.cam.ac.uk & @anooshc.bsky.social in conversation with a host of top projects. Emphasised once again the importance of heritage assets as vital social infrastructure.

High levels of #Suffolk pleasantness out on the bike 🚲 this afternoon.

I suppose we don't have enough betting shops so giving over our limited public space (in this case KX) to pop up versions seems like a great idea 👍

The Guildhall is a belter too.

First time in Oswestry. Nice to see the Grade 1 former merchant's house, Llwyd Mansion, undergoing repair and adaptation for a mix of new uses. It was bought by the town council after it had fallen into disrepair.

'Each project built on the momentum of the last, layering confidence and investment in a town that had long been written off.' > this is an inspiring story about #Redruth's regeneration and the community-led projects that have helped drive it. ahfund.org.uk/news/blog/re...

And went to see the fantastic Made in Egypt exhibition at the Fitzwilliam today. A reminder that craft jobs have been around a little while, so probably aren't going away anytime soon.

And next door to Keelman's is the rather wonderful Salvation Army Social Services Centre. Two contrasting but both excellent examples of social housing, built nearly three centuries apart.

Finally got to see around the Grade II* Keelman's Hospital in Newcastle. Fantastic project led by @twbpt.bsky.social to bring it back into use as affordable housing after 15 years of being vacant. @archhfund.org.uk

Visit to Port Edgar yesterday to see the work of Lar Housing Trust bringing the former barracks back into use for housing. Views aren't too bad.

The new centre, designed by, Tonkin Liu, houses masons’ workshops, digital fabrication tools, & a hall of residence for apprentices. Sounds like lots of learning here that might be applied elsewhere - but that it's not straight-forward, with lots of trial and error about what works. V interesting!

Up in York today for a meeting and was very lucky to be able to have a look around the new York Minster Centre of Excellence for Craft Skills. Fascinating how new technology is being incorporated into centuries old skills and processes.

What do we do with our former department stores? Well, Age Concern Southend has one answer that seems to be working. Heard some lovely stories tonight of the impact The Haven has had (4000 visitors a month!) & the wider benefit it's had on the high street. Inspirational stuff. @archhfund.org.uk

More discussion of this type of thing in Liverpool tomorrow!
September 28, 2025 at 7:42 PM
And with what looks like impeccable timing, we have a session with @moreincommonuk.bsky.social & @nationaltrust.org.uk discussing just this type of thing on Monday! @jacktshaw.bsky.social @anooshc.bsky.social

Murray Edwards College, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon (of Barbican fame). The buildings, the light, the water, the gardens, the art collection...all superb. And one of the few Cambridge colleges you can easily access!

If you're at Labour conference, @archhfund.org.uk is joining @moreincommonuk.bsky.social & @nationaltrust.org.uk to discuss how heritage & community driven regeneration should be central to reviving places & civic pride. Looking forward to it! @patrickhurley.bsky.social @anooshc.bsky.social

And I am still of the mind that we need to be developing a Girona or two for the UK and reusing a few buildings a bit like this. 🚲🏰

Not saying it'll be easy but in trying to solve the problem of the hotels themselves, we should be looking at the Paradores model in Spain and the Bishopsgate Hotel in Derry - something can be done. www.derryjournal.com/news/bishops....

El Capricho, Comillas. Only the second residential building #Gaudi had worked on, at the ripe old age of 31, and one of the few buildings of his outside Catalonia (apparently he never actually visited the site).

Athletic Bilbao vs Rayo Vallecano. Entertaining 1-0, although a slightly dubious penalty won it for the hosts. First time here and as friendly and bonkers an atmosphere as everyone says it is.

Planned this trip before knowing the Goya Museum is currently closed for redevelopment 🫤 - thankfully they've got a very good temporary exhibition here at the moment. Think it's due to reopen next year.
