I did a bunch of coloring and stuff before realizing I'd completely messed up which layers I was working on lol.
Live and learn.

Extremely evident that Maria got 2-3x the time investment lol. Ruffles are fun (but hard) to draw.
I used some basic grid guides when trying to replicate the reference shapes, which turned out really well, but took a LOT of time going back and forth.

The hair colors in both the anime adaptation and the manga are always so pretty!

Trying to just side by side match the character art to get better at making my hands do what I want them to.
Its also cool how just a little creasing/shadows go SO FAR when it comes to making clothes look good. Actually crazy.

Tried sketching a scene from the then airing Gundam GQuuuuuux. I guess my takeaway from it is that perspective is hard.

Tried recreating some of the concept art to get better at using the paint brush tools.

The first attempt was super lumpy, but the second turned out nice.

With a 30 drawing delay between what I'm drawing vs posting and the fact that I've been kinda bad with practicing, the drawing date and the current date are kinda getting uhhhh....

Not great at people faces, so his jaw is giga big vs the reference.

Largely just followed the reference for the pose/shadows/highlights, however a simple canvas texture over everything and a gradient background go a long way to making it pop!
Ignore the wonky tail proportions....

Turning off the lines at the end also looked kinda neat, so there's a version of that too.
Having a cloudy horizon with mew flying above it just felt right for a background.

I used some guides to try and keep the shapes roughly proportional to the reference, and it turned out well.
Still love the aggressively highlighted early art style.

Pretty sure folks had recommendations on best or worst starter based on early gym types, but that was way above my head back when I first played the games.
I really like the almost watercolor painted look the early gen 1 art-style used, Its really cool looking.

But to keep it silly, I found a fun frame from the show and used that as the reference.
Since he's fairly simply drawn, I spent a little time to throw together a simple background based on the reference too.

Trying out just using the pencil tool in Krita. Kinda gives it that colored pencil look.

I was never able to properly be patient and level-up/evolve one when I played the games. Instead I would always wait until mid-late game when you could find Gyarados from random encounters.

It's fairly simple, but it took me a while to sketch>clean it up>add colors>add shadows/highlights following the reference.
Had to trace circles to get the baubles on tail/neck looking half decent.
Overall, happy with how it turned out. :)
