HDV doesn’t require HBV for replication. Only packaging and transmission. HDV uses host cellular proteins for replication. It’s just hitching a ride. Also been shown to package into other non-HBV particles (HCV, dengue, VSV).

There are multiple reports of #HDV being detected in the absence of #HBV. My lab detected HDV protein and rna in salivary glands of patients with #Sjogrens disease (~50% of pts). No evidence of past HBV infection. Expression of HDAg causes disease. Multiple small reports of HDV+ blood w/out HBV.
