Taxes are hard and scary, so here's some helpful tips for anyone running a small business and/or doing the online creator thing! I made this specifically for the rave/festival scene, but it's applicable to others as well.

The following has been side checked by an accountant, but should be considered opinion unless verified for yourself!
Remember, tax laws vary by state, so most of what this covers is federal.

WHY?
- Doing so protects your personal assets & bank accounts from being taken for business debt repayment.
- You still file taxes as an individual instead of having to do business taxes AND individual taxes.
- Tracking income and expenses is WAY easier.
- Cost of filing for an LLC varies state by state, but on average the cost is around $130.
- If you don't have a brick and mortar bank you like, Lili is an online bank that will allow you to open a business account.

- Tax code has a lot of rules that require judgement. For example: "hobby income" is exactly what it sounds like - income you get from a hobby rather than a business.
You cannot take deductions on hobby income.
- How do they determine "hobby income" vs business income if you're not making much money? One thing they look at is whether you've filed an LLC! Having an LLC and business account are a reliable way to show that you're serious about your work.
- If you have any question about whether your income qualifies as "hobby" or
"business" income, consult a qualified tax pro in your state!
