Panic came to her in the form of footsteps and a shadow. She listened as a quiet muttering accompanied the sound of boxes being shuffled about. The same noise she’d made on her search through the front of the building. Taking slow and cautious steps back, Loretta turned to face the entrance to the aisle she hid in. Readying her rifle, the muzzle pointed at a spot where at any moment someone could appear. She counted her rounds again. Silently tapping her fingers against the barrel. Trying to distract herself from the noises that set her hands to shaking and her aim with it. One round had been spent for a rabbit that proved too evasive. Two had been used to snag herself a crow which had been dinner for a couple nights. And one to scare off some growling creature in the dark on a particularly anxious night. Which left her with six rounds that she had no replacements for. A loud bang that came from the other side of the shelf she crouched behind nearly caused her to jump. Instead she bit her tongue against the yelp that wanted to escape. Her gaze went to the cardboard box at the end of the isle, where she’d been stacking the small cans of paint. The resolve she had to keep her prize faltered in the face of possible conflict so close by. If whoever had banged on the shelf reached for the box, she would let it go. The shadows behind her were deep, she could meld into them and save her ammo and herself for another day.

Cassy had been staring death in the face since she’d been stabbed. She almost gave up then. Almost wanted to give up still. But it was different. Accepting a silent and inexorable fate was easy. She could just go to sleep and let that be it. To fight, gamble, with the stakes being her life, was another matter. There would be nothing peaceful about her demise if Issac won. Hubris, along with some acceptance of the inevitable clash, told her to stand her ground. The chase would have to end, eventually. “Don’t give up now. You’re such fun prey,” Issac sneered as he came to stop feet away from her. “Go to hell!” Cassy snapped. Issac laughed, playing with the tip of the dagger against his fingers. “Afraid I’ve already been. Tabitha just keeps bringing me back.”

Tall fences hemmed in the backyard. Providing her the privacy she needed. There wasn’t much thought into the proceeding matters. The backdoor met her with the expected resistance of a lock when she jiggled the handle. Weeks ago, it would have been enough to stop her. She would have had to just accept seeing the house from the outside as enough. Now she had the recourse of magic. So, with growing nerves, she held onto the doorknob and focused her thoughts around it. Her intention was to slide the lock out of place. What she got instead was a loud crack as the wood split away and the door swung open. “Shit!” Cassy hissed. There was a part of her that expected a more theatrical response. The opening of a tomb was met with rushing air and clouds of dust. That set people to back away, to question their resolve. Instead, there was silence. Darkness. And the stale taste that accompanied a place where nobody had opened a window for untold weeks.

It was foolish bravado that saw Cassy head out alone. She could blame it on habitual independence. Much of her life as an only child had been events, games, and studies of her own initiative. Or she could pin it on a noble stance. Choosing to spare Kalissa the risk and shield her from whatever guilt—morally or legally—that the endeavour could entail. But, as she sat on the train, her apprehension flooding the cabin, she knew the reason was stubborn pride. A selfish need to be the one that solved the case.

With a deep breath she whispered to herself, “The firing order of an in-line six is 1-5-3-6-2-4.” As she reached the end of her out of order countdown she squeezed the trigger. The sonic boom split open the quiet air. Before the noise faded the body of her target, the round piercing their skull, fell to the ground. Blood and brain matter splattering on anyone unfortunate enough to be standing nearby. Predicted chaos erupted. Shock at seeing their comrade’s head torn open by a .22 round was quickly replaced by rage and discipline. A few of them turned toward where the shot had rang from while the others lagged behind. One of them was Loretta’s second target.

Awareness, consciousness—as painful and unwanted as it was—returned to Cassy in a flash. Of panicked gasps, frantic clawing, and flailing at non-existent foes. She wanted to stay a guest of the bituminous expanse. Where thought was slow and painless. And where she didn’t have to force leaden eyes to open. To peer blearily at the wooden floor, at the spot where Sonja’s ghost had lain.

Apparently I didn't use the word qualify, but feeling out of your depth is about the same.
The ramifications were plentiful. There were questions to ask about the overlapping nature of magic or the power of the subconscious to turn anything into a macabre medley. Ultimately, there were too many for Cassy to focus on, if not because it felt so far beyond her ken as to be laughable, then because she didn’t want to worry about a new mystery. While her parents dotted, arguing with her to rest and take it easy, she wanted to keep pushing. Seeing Sonja again, feeling her, worked to harden Cassy’s resolve. So, sequestered in her bedroom, she kept practising magic away from prying eyes and unanswerable questions.

Last she had checked her phone, back on the bus ride to the university, the day’s temperature reached well into the high twenties. Each bit of warm air that floated about her, caught in the electric maelstrom, became a source for her desires. The flame that already burned at her lungs became the spark. Heat drained from the surrounding area. With such haste and intensity that her muscles ached and her ears popped. A pocket of summer turned to tundra and the depths of frigid winter. Channelled into the oncoming conflagration.
