Title: The Hollowed “Everything's wrong with them, those hollowed folk. They ain't right. Whatever used to make them a person, it ain't in them anymore. There's something else; its twisted, dark, and corrupt, its scooped out their soul, what made them whole. I’d almost feel sorry for them, if some didn't drink that darkness willingly. Whatever IT is, its wearing their skin, pretending to be like us. But they ain't us. They are life broken. They are life scorned.” The Hollowed are agents of The Deep Dark, lowly servants commanded by The Abstract, (colloquially known to the Gifted as "Shifters"). They are sentient agents with little free will, their actions often tethered to whatever Shifter corrupted their soul. The Dark Arts are the primary known ways of Hollowed being created, usually from Gifted individuals succumbing to the call of The Depths through the excessive use of the Dark Arts. Sometimes, such acts have collateral damage, and poor unwilling souls who were part of a sacrificial ritual run the risk of becoming Hollowed themselves. They become sick and crazed, the whispers from The Depths following their every waking moment, luring them to the Abyss until it rots them from within. Some Hollowed can bend the rules of their agency, keeping most of their wits depending on the level of corruption. This allows them to fight back against the calls of the Deep Dark, or at the very least make decisions given from their own mind. Others have gone completely insane, lashing out at whoever comes near or mindlessly following commands from their eldritch masters. But even those with great willpower can't last long, as The Abstract will tighten the leash and continue to try to corrupt them further. In rarer cases, Hollowed are created by just getting too close to The Depths. No person can withstand being in the presence of those who dwell deep below. The sheer power alone will turn one's soul inside-out.
