I like this quote from, Kasulis’s Zen Action, Zen Person, “If the existence of the present and future depends upon the past, then present and future should be in the past.” We live for our present/ future but never catch up to them. Constantly living for the next passing moment. #DrSethZenClass

I loved finding out that Tina Turner was influenced by Buddhism. It’s so interesting to find out which celebrities practice Buddhism since it is not advertised or shown like other religions. #DrSethBuddhClass

From Jikoji Zen Center,”You don’t want to be known by anybody, not because of sinfulness, or your many errors, but to remain in a pure, unknown state.” This is a common example of Zen where one must let go of control to immerse themselves in the practice. #DrSethZenClass

This image of the Bodhidharma is like none I’ve ever seen. We usually see him sitting down hunched over/legs crossed, never standing with beads of a stick. But we know it’s him because of his eyebrows, beard, and robe. Strange image to come across.

It is interesting to see how ‘ahead of times’ Buddhism was with women but not at the same time. Women could be nuns, but had less rank than novice male monks. Back then it was so meaningful to women, but now they are behind the times. #DrSethBuddhClass

Yamplosky’s Development of Japanese Zen, said,”The practice of Zen and the pursuit of the Way is nothing other than grappling with the great problem of birth and death.” This quote is intriguing because it tells the practitioner to treat Zen like any other difficult concept. #DrSethZenClass

Why was there a need to create Pure Land Buddhism if its philosophy falls under Mahayana Buddhism?

The other day in class we discussed if Zen was a religion or not. I’m still in the middle about what side I’m on for this argument. Does anyone care to try to persuade me to one in particular? #DrSethZenClass

We learned that the Sill Road was also how Buddhism traveled through East Asia. I found it so fascinating how the Silk Road had so much influence in religion today. Outside of colleges most school districts teach kids that the Silk Road was simply for trading goods. #DrSethBuddhClass

In class we discussed a Zen master and a student and how sometimes the interaction is the answer to the student. This class reminded me of a scene I watched in my film class about a Zen master and little boy. The answer was always “We’ll see” to the little boy till the boy understood. #DrSethZenClass

Recently, we learned about Tibetan influence in America and it instantly made me think of Avatar the Last Airbender. The air temple that the main character, Aang comes from. I believe the 14th Dalai Lama,Tenzin Gyatso was the inspiration for two characters in the series.

Kraft’s Zen Tradition and Transition, “ Leave behind the false, return to the true:make no discrimination of self and others.” Reminded me of a much simpler version my mom told me when I was younger. To always stay true to myself/my morals and always be kind to others.

Jerryson’s Buddhist Traditions and Violence, discussed the color of orange robes being associated with serotonin reminded me of a lecture in my adversting class. About a month ago we discussed how companies use colors like blue to associate a sense of trust with their customers. #DrSethBuddhClass

A quote I like from, The Platform Sutra, “Meditation and wisdom are of one essence and not two.” It moves away from the notion that to meditate you must have a clear mind and know nothing. One must dedicate themselves to the practice and use their thoughts as an advantage. #DrSethZenClass

If the goal in Buddhism is to end the never ending cycle of suffering, why do practitioners participate in harmful yoga? Does it have something to to with gaining good karma?

I remember a class where we talked about the different types of Buddha that people keep in their homes. I came across this Dreaming/ Sleeping Buddha in an artist store downtown. It reminded me of the Buddha I have in my home for inner peace.

In our reading for week 14 we talked about the consumerism of Zen. When I came across this page on TikTok just shows another example of Zen being mistaken/misused for profits. #DrSethZenClass

I like this quote by Mazu where he says,” This Mind is Buddha. Ordinary Mind is the way.” It represents the idea of enlightenment already within us. That Buddha nature is present already in us but we must accept it and see it as plainly and simple in our everyday lives. #DrSethZenClass

In class we briefly discussed the meaning of Kokoro, being heart and mind. Which reminded me of a place downtown called Kokoro and how they have the sweetest employees I’ve ever met. Which made me wonder if they chose this name on purpose knowing its definition.

This is a TikTok about, The White Lotus where Buddhism is highly mentioned. This quote the actress talks about shows the lack of knowledge another character shows towards Buddhism in the series. Which is the norm for many who confuse Buddhism with just living a simplistic life. #DrSethBuddhClass
