18% of Students in a study of 121 community colleges are classified as non–award seeking, or not actively pursuing an associate degree, a certificate or a diploma; among community colleges in Virginia and West Virginia, more than one-third of students in credit-bearing courses are not enrolled in an award-seeking program, while just 6% of those in North Carolina are classified that way. Source: “First Look: The 2024 Survey of Community College Outcomes,” published this week by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s Community College Initiative; its 2024 survey examines data from 121 community colleges across five states.
