I have been having a lot of feelings about parenting right now. I haven’t written a poem in years.
What were you doing? What were you doing when fascism came? What were you doing when it knocked on your door? You used to be filled with fire and righteous indignation about every atrocity, every wrong-headed sanction. What was your part in the revolution? How did you tally the score? Punk rock and rebellion is more than plaid pants, screaming music and trying to score. Think about how you used to fight. Used to protest. Used to write letters to your senators, to congress, to the President himself. What do you do now, mom? What do you do now. The revolution whispers in my keyhole and leaves pamphlets under my door. My days are filled with finger painting, potty training, storybooks, and chicken nugget making. My time and energy is put into hiding my fear and my grief from my children so they grow to be brave and happy. I lie awake at night fearing for their future while they dream of race cars and candy. Because happiness in the face of fear is itself revolutionary. While my job may appear small, it’s so vitally important. to make sure I raise boys who will grow into men who will not be swayed by fascist agendas. While it is glamorous to fight on the frontline, chain wrapped around your fist, when you return home, who will be to mend your shirt so you may continue to fight and resist?
