Turns out, predicting crises isn’t about crystal balls, it’s about data. Enjoyed exploring the future of early warning data at the German Federal Foreign Office @diplo.de with colleagues across academia & practice.

ACLED locking researchers out feels less like data protection, more like damage control. Especially when the numbers already… don’t add up because they're sourced from people doing the fighting. 📉

If Dante wrote Inferno today, Circle 9 would be a heat dome and the sinners drive SUVs and run coal plants. 🔥🚗🏭

I'm also presenting joint work with @acalacino.bsky.social in the same session. ✨

We argue that environmentalists are less likely to get killed during election cycles because the increased media attention could jeopardize FDI inflows.

Is my research topic relevant, or is it just stalking me on holiday? Does that count as fieldwork? 🕵️‍♀️

10 years abroad. Countless supermarkets. Endless heartbreak. And then today … the Zweifel Paprika chips appeared in Germany. This is my redemption arc. 🙂

The World Food Program (WFP) will be hit worst.

Not all aid goes through #USAID, but a big chunk does. With Trump likely slashing direct payments as well, brace for serious consequences.
February 4, 2025 at 7:45 AM
The defunding of aid will affect food insecurity the most. We know that food insecurity fuels more violence & conflict.
February 4, 2025 at 7:45 AM
The defunding of aid will hit many countries affected by protracted and complex crises.
February 4, 2025 at 7:45 AM
The defunding of #USAID and US humanitarian aid in general will have devastating effects on the global humanitarian system. More than 40% of all official humanitarian aid comes from the US. The system is completely dependent on US contributions.

How do autocratic regimes exploit crises?

We show how electoral autocracies manipulate aid distribution to reinforce power.

Erdogan’s government politicized the 2023 earthquake response by restricting & co-opting aid organizations and prioritizing loyal voter bases over minorities.

Drawing on secondary survivor testimonies and legal frameworks, I highlight the need for more tangible prevention and follow-up mechanisms for survivors based on the legal duty of care of aid organizations.

Thanks for your reply. The matter gave me no peace. The pop density of Sevastopol is much smaller than Kyiv's (but larger area). The annual nl averages since 2012 show that the values have always been larger for Sevastopol, but there has been an increase again since 2017.
December 21, 2023 at 9:44 AM
Does anyone have an explanation for the exceptionally high nighttime light levels in Sevastopol? Is this solely driven by the military base?

In a plot twist I never saw coming, Swedish trains are proving less reliable and less punctual than the infamous German Bahn.

At least the view is an upgrade!
