This one too? URL links to paper with similar-sounding title, some different authors, different journal. Title in this reference does not seem to exist.

Eliezer Yudkowsky, quoted in the NY Times.

For anyone who has followed the "AI Safety" / "Less Wrong" discussions, this is...well, something.

I was profoundly saddened to hear that my friend Brian Cantwell Smith has passed away after a long illness. Brian's work on on the foundations of computing and intelligence was deep and insightful. He was a remarkable person & overall mensch. May his memory be a blessing.

Okay, I actually read the article. I appreciate the authors' skeptical take on Yudkowsky & co. But the author himself lacks skepticism about two widely reported but misleading claims.

TIL that you can get Google's AI overview to say anything you want, just by asking.

Yes indeed. This book, which has almost the same title as my book, is still up on Amazon. I'm pretty sure some (most?) of the text was generated by ChatGPT. The book Amazon took down had my book's exact title and was clearly AI-generated.

Fun snippet recounting the 1956 Dartmouth summer workshop on AI. Especially Minsky's prediction at the end.

LLM product placement and search optimization is here and it's as dystopian as you expected.

I did 5 independent replications of each condition. So I got 30 names (some repeated) for each condition

Results:

"tough-minded and rigorous": 22/30 males, 8/30 females

"friendly and kind": 8/30 males, 22/30 females

Not really surprising, I guess....

Examples below.

John McCarthy won the fight between calling it "artificial intelligence" and "complex information processing" (favored by Herbert Simon and Allen Newell).

Very interesting paper!!

BTW, in the refs. "G. Team" is going to get a high citation count as first author, but I don't think it's a person....
