SO. MUCH. ALGAE! So interesting to see how Living Seawalls, initially designed for Sudney Harbour, perform at different locations!
Well done to Franz Bauer for collecting the 2 year dataset on the biodiversity colonising the Living Seawalls in Plymouth. Fucoid algae continues to dominate. 🤎 Many new species moving in..🦀🐌🪸

Check out the latest Living Seawall, in Ireland, thanks to Louise Firth and her amazing team! Can't wait to see what moves in!
Come see our new Living Seawalls in #Cobh #Cork! 1st in Ireland 🇮🇪. #Global experiment 🌍 started in #Sydney 🇦🇺. Huge thanks to HEA funding, @uccresearch.bsky.social, #PortOfCork for support & Inland & Coastal Marinas for installation. Looking forward to seeing what marine life colonises 🦀🪸🐚🦐🦞🐟🌊.

Artificial lights can reverse shading effects from overwater structures, but their success depends on the environment 💡

In low-turbidity areas, low-intensity light mimics natural conditions, while high-intensity light promotes algal growth 🌱 🧪 🌎

Fieldwork Friday!👌
Our team has been busy these past couple weeks surveying the biodiversity and vertical zonation patterns on our oldest Living Seawall. Big thanks to Aliah Banchik who joined us out in the field on Wednesday and took some great photos for us!

Strongly agree with this letter in Science arguing that field-based research should be more highly and fairly valued in academia. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
The value of field research in academia
From anthropology to zoology, immersion within communities, cultural settings, and study systems is integral to research and learning (1, 2). Fieldwork, the direct observation and collection of data i...
