Team Science. Marine biologist researching #Arctic #DeepSea & #plastic pollution; born at 326,68 ppm (she/her, sie/ihr). @MBergmann@mstdn.social
🆕'Breaking the Plastic Wave' report is out, concluding that without ambituous systemic measures #plastic pollution will double until 2040 equivalent to dumping nearly a 🛻 garbage truck worth of plastic waste every second since, growing twice as fast as waste management.

🪸Good morning from @awi.de HAUSGARTEN observatory in the #Arctic #DeepSea. This photo taken by our Ocean Floor Observation Bathymetry System (~2500 m) shows sponges (Caulophacus arcticus, Cladorhiza gelida) with a comatulid, anemones, soft corals (Gersemia fruticosa) & shrimp (Bythocaris) on them!

Ha ha, I found several more in that transect, like this beauty, this time resting on the sediment. On the left side, we see pogonophoran worms tubes and the whitish shading comes from bacterial mats thriving at this cold-vent site.

Good day from the Haakon Mosby Mud Vocano (~1200 m depth), here with a nice Arctic skate (Amblyraja hyperborea (Collett, 1879)) recorded by our Ocean Floor Observation System in the Norwegian Sea in 2002 😊!

🐳 New study finds‼️7 kg‼️of #plastic items – chiefly polyethylene sheets- in a beaked whale in Rhodes, Mediterranean, which likely caused malnutrition, potentially contributing to the whale's death. PE sheets carried oil/tar increasing the risk for toxic effects.

🛥️ New study on #plastic on the sea bed of the Channel made use of items collected by trawlers that took part in the #FishingForLitter scheme! It reports fish and 🦈 catshark that were trapped in various items, presumably as they sought shelter & failed to escape.

🪸 New study reports VERY high densities of marine debris on
the deep seafloor of the Jordanian Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea: 4,975 - 79,840 items per km2 (mean = 27,267 items/km2)!
48% were #plastics and highest densities were observed near a public beach 🏖️.

⛴️ New study investigates the #plastic pellet or nurdle spill from the capsized cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 in 2025 leading to at least 858 bags (about 22 tons) of #pastic pellets washing ashore the coasts of Kerala and Kanyakumari after the disaster.

1/2 Two manuscripts for #PeerReview in one day, which seem to be AI-based plagiarism ☹️. And this is only me. Luckily I picked it up because it was based on my work.
This is is a waste of precious researcher's time and undermines the credibility of #science, which is already on attack.

What a fantastic energy once again: @CariCari in #Bremen, thank you!!!🙏

🪱New paper by Jannik Schnier, who recently defended his #PhD thesis 🙌. It shows a strong drop in nematode numbers (<75%) & community shift at @awi.de HAUSGARTEN observatory in the #Arctic #DeepSea over 20 years despite a rise in phytodetrital food & bacterial numbers.

🪸Our new study on long-term changes in megafauna from the #Arctic #DeepSea finds faunal density & species richness increased & then decreased over the 20 years period. Community structure made a partial return to the 2002 state in 2022, suggesting cyclicality. @awi.de
