Tbh, unrealistically low settled population density is a problem I have in my world building. Sitting around naming settlements with <500 people just gets very tiring, and so I just stop making settlements.

That does make sense, but I still feel that in a medieval society, the natural diffusion of language would still have a significant drop off.
