Climate change has sent Europe an invoice - €738 billion in losses from extreme weather since 1980, according to the EEA.

To find out what that really means, I dipped my toe into the world of climate finance💶

Data from the Office for National Statistics, released earlier this year, show a similar and worrying trend.

The overall number of butterflies in the UK has dropped by 18 per cent over time, and in England by 19 per cent.

By contrast, the holly blue had its second-worst Big Butterfly Count result on record, the common blue had its third worst and the meadow brown had its fourth-worst Count result.

Thankfully, some species did show increases📈

The large white and small white both recorded their best Big Butterfly Count result on record.

While a marked improvement on last summer’s record low of just seven, it will do little to reverse longer-term declines.

Climate change is making the risk of wildfires a bigger threat to the UK than they were historically. This year has seen record levels of burnt ground.

Knowing the risk in your neighbourhood matters: preparation and precautions can prevent disaster.

One neighbourhood stands out: Blean Forest, Chartham Hatch & University, located right next to Canterbury Cathedral.

Bordering the Blean Woods National Nature Reserve, over two-thirds of homes here face wildfire risk - the highest rate in the country.

Homes in the centre of major cities are largely safe!

But on the outskirts the picture changes.

For example, near Heathrow - located on the fringe of urban London and the grassy fields of Surrey, Hertfordshire and Berkshire - more than 60pc of homes are at risk...

We obtained the homes’ co-ordinates and mapped them to neighbourhoods and local authorities.

Using census dwelling counts, we then calculated the share of homes at risk.

That gives plenty of hotspots (literally).

Bottom line: 1976 was exceptional, but in many was it was Britain's first taste of a new normal.

Due to climate change, intense heat has become worse since then. We've just gotten better at handling it - but how long will that last?

12/13

The reason it happened in 1976 was because of some very specific preceding conditions. Rainfall was scarce throughout 1975 and the early part of 1976.

The intense and prolonged summer heat of 1976 exacerbated these dry conditions, leaving many reservoirs depleted.

It's a clear sign that heatwaves are becoming hotter and occurring more frequently -- though this does depend on the region.

What made 1976 so noteworthy and memorable?

Definitely its length! To this day, the 16-day heatwave remains unmatched in terms of its duration.

It gives you a quick overview of the highest temperatures ever recorded by your nearest weather station (that we’re tracking) on this day, telling you instantly whether today is an outlier.

Conclusion: it’s a lot warmer than usual … 🥵

You might think: maybe the audience just really liked Israel's song?

Not so much - according to Spotify streaming data, Sweden's entry was much more popular.

In this year's contest, there were some suspicious discrepancies.

Of the 14 countries that awarded any jury points to Israel, nine countries had a more than five point difference between the jury vote and public vote.

(The maximum that can be awarded is 12)

According to Clionadh Raleigh, the founder and director of ACLED, this is because it comes down to the different groups involved in the war.

Myanmar, for instance, was ranked second – there are hundreds of armed groups engaged in dozens of different battles.

These conflicts were responsible for more than half the fatalities recorded in 2024.

The only other instance in recent history when the global death toll exceeded 200,000 was at the peak of the Rwandan genocide in 1994
