The GOP cut food stamps for veterans and the homeless, then ended hunger data so you could not see who they starved. That is not policy. It is calculated harm. #WhoVoted4This #GOPCruelty #GOPWarOnAmericans

I was really looking forward to the R(ev)ise and Shine writing retreat so I could hone my craft, but this retreat gave me so much more- a sense of community. I hope this feeling stays with me until next year. #ReviseandShine

I challenged myself to read (or re-read) one banned book for each day of Banned Book Week. I found joy, love, anger, hate- every aspect of humanity in these beautiful books. Every person deserves to see themselves reflected in books. #nocensorship #freepeoplereadfreely

Day 6: My favorite independent bookstore showcases banned books. So many amazing books! I picked “And Tango Makes Three” by Peter Parnell, Justin Richardson, and Henry Cole, a true story about two male penguins at the Central Park Zoo who adopt a baby penguin. #bannedbookweek #freepeoplereadfreely

Day 5 brought me “The House in the Cerulean Sea” by TJ Klune. A beautiful story about found family and acceptance. Apparently some folks don’t like the idea that the couple is gay and the children are magical, but I can’t think of a more loving family. Can’t wait to read the sequel. #bannedbookweek

Day 4, I’m re-reading “Sold” by Patricia McCormick. A story about Human Trafficking, the second largest illegal industry in the U.S. according to UNICEF. But also a story about how the human spirit triumphs in the face of adversity. Isn’t that the story we want our young people to read right now?

Angie Thomas' "The Hate U Give" has been banned every year since
it was published in 2017. For Day 3, I’m re-reading this must-read book.

The Department of Defense has banned 596 books from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools’ libraries. For Day 2 of Banned Book Week, I’m re-reading Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. #BannedBookWeek #freespeech
