My theory is that that question comes from the cognitive dissonance of hiring artists to make a product that will always have its artistic qualities undermined by the profit motive.

You're not alone. I think most consumers are with you. Consumers will only tolerate so much of this. I'm looking forward to seeing what Lina Khan does in NYC on this subject

here's my projection-based take
Schumer and senate Democrats are our codependent parent, forcing us to capitulate to the raging narcissist parent that they'll never stop trying to appease. And we have no choice but to deal with the consequences of that enablement.
