V little here on role of the UK on the international stage, incl how to expand protection space amid rising displacement—esp if the government is also trying to restrict asylum. ‘Exploring reforms to allow a limited pool of refugees to apply for employment’ seems like a fig leaf.

Promising goal of linking bodies responsible for industrial strategy, workforce participation, skills training, and immigration . The UK is behind the curve here, and could learn from Australia for e.g. which has been doing 10 yr projections of growth sectors, incl green economy.

Good to see planning elevated over caps or targets, but the real reason for data for population projections is to alleviate housing and public services pressures. A missed opportunity for Canada-style immigration levels planning, as the Institute for Government has proposed.

The government wants to signal fairness and control amid the rise of Reform, but some proposals in here seem just headline fodder - e.g. preventing people from permanent residence for a decade, which could hamper efforts to recruit top talent or increase costs on families
