Oooh! You might know the answer to this question that stumped me in Glasgow. What are these for? Suggestions from current and former Glasgow residents were aesthetics, to prove you're bougie, personal safety, and for leaning. Any ideas?

Thanks to @johnfinnemore.bsky.social, I thoroughly enjoyed a visit to this fake.

Despite the reactions captured here, I promise it was a great panel discussion on local growth at the ONS Local conference with @danolner.bsky.social @tompope.bsky.social and @tomforth.co.uk
We need more local capacity & more access to data and robust evaluation findings for better local decisions

On my way up to Leeds to speak at the ONS Local conference tomorrow on local growth. Table seat, WiFi, tea, and sending out slides to attendees from this morning's boosting business investment webinar. Not bad!

Delightful to see @pftompkins.bsky.social et al in Bristol last night. Clearly the end of the show was an homage to Bristol's Aardman Animation 'The Wrong Trousers' (not pants!)

Oh no. If anyone was wondering how my spare time will be spent throughout the autumn and probably winter, it will be this.

Thanks, @johnfinnemore.bsky.social

Writing a blog about #localgov economic strategies and came across this great summary on using data from @timharford.bsky.social One to keep!
We cover most of these in our training on evidence, and I use 'Is that a big number?' constantly.

Great example of why it's important to think about what's being measured. Top marks for labelling allergens, but the idea behind that is so everyone can eat something.... which I couldn't.

Best (and worst) bit is this correction, particularly when I live in a 7x LA and still have plenty of friends who can't afford to buy.

I'm mulling over what this means for our work. The % are transport teams use of consultants, but I'm sure this is seen in econ dev.
1/4 of LAs use consultants to do their big picture plans, and 3/4 use consultants to write their strategic cases.

Excited to see an RCT on the front page of today's Times--well done @TheRSC for robust evaluation.
I assume the fact that there is an RCT to write about is down to the influence of @EducEndowFoundn

There is just about enough space on this train seat to process all the "what next?" ideas after running training with a Combined Authority. Great points and lots of enthusiasm, but their next challenge--actually implementing it-- is so freaking hard!

Highly recommend going to New Bedford MA for the annual Moby Dick marathon. www.whalingmuseum.org/program/moby...

In 2014 we listened to chapters in the whaling museum and in the Seamen's Bethel. (We didn't stay for the duration, there were other sights to see!)

#Localgov transport, planning, public health ppl-- work with economic development folks and often wonder what they are on about?

Looking back over the UKSPF Investment Plan template that local gov't had to complete. "give evidence where possible"?!?!
Come on, folks! You're breaking my heart.

Delighted to get a shout-out for @whatworksgrowth from @stianwestlake about @thomasforth prev criticism of our high evidence standards.
We're doing a lot more to meet local gov't where they're at-- a great plug for our new workshop Making use of evidence...

😍 We asked #localgov attendees at the end of our latest @whatworksgrowth intro to logic model course to share feedback to promote the course to other LA officers.
Pretty happy with their comments!

Great to be celebrating and reflecting on 10 years of @WhatWorksUK with our fellow centres and @whatworksgrowth

I've been thinking about competitive funding for #localgov #econdev
What if places needed to have a Local Economic Development Strategy (similar to LTP) to access an allocation of funding? More time on deciding local priorities and a pipeline of projects, less time on bidding

Yesterday we grouped activities, outputs and outcomes to support a local authority in developing their logic model. Moving them around made it easier to test links. Having them on individual notes means we could focus on assumptions one by one. @whatworksgrowth walks the walk!
November 2, 2024 at 2:25 PM
So how's your #InvestmentPlan coming along? A bit concerned that this isn't the evidence-led and need-led approach that places need. #EconomicDevelopment #UKSPF

Chuffed with this feedback from our first 'Making use of logic models: practical training or local economic growth' training at @whatworksgrowth
We still have a few spaces for 30/6 (new and improved based on feedback!)

Great to hear from @Satchers on #socialvalue at the #NationalPlanningSummit
I've heard this from economic development teams. Interesting to hear it as a potential element of Local Plans--incl in Islington. Absolutely an area that needs more evaluation and evidence!
November 2, 2024 at 2:25 PM
East Birmingham is a massive area for an inclusive growth strategy with a holistic place-based approach. I'd love to hear how @BhamCityCouncil are using data and evidence in developing this. #NationalPlanningSummit

Some interesting stuff from @essex_cc and This is Purpose Coalition-- #LevellingUp Goals looking to guide more outcome-based work. With long-term goals, will be interesting to see how shorter-term monitoring + lag in population data will hold up....
