Katherine Manners, daughter and heir of the 6th Earl, was also a proponent of memento mori, using skulls to support columns on the tomb that she commissioned in Westminster Abbey for her husband, George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham in 1634, completed six years after his assassination.

Happy to be here! For my first post (on Halloween) I want to introduce two 17th century tombs 🪦 The first was erected for the 6th Earl of Rutland in Bottesford. It offers the unusual proclamation that his sons, who are sculpted holding skulls, were killed by "wicked practise and sorcerye" [witches].
