Also, I recommend cleaning out a brand-new pen before you ink it up for the first time. None of my pens have worked perfectly right out of the box until I clean them out

Seconding Psychonaut. Pigment ink can dry up and cake the insides, and calligraphy ink isn't for fountain pens. Diamine has some relatively cheap and easy-to-use inks and come in a variety of colors. Try something simple without sheen or shimmer first.
